Servicing bearings - what's your routine?
Discussion
Had a bit of a wake up call.
Specialized Crux Pro - got it a year ago (still got a year to go on interest free credit)
Has had a fair bit of use but very little wet use I'd guess around 2500km mostly on road.
Headset felt a little rough. Nothing ridiculous - very slight resistance felt when lifting front wheel and turning bars. I've borked headsets before by being lazy so now pretty conscientious.
Stripped it down to clean and regrease bearings - not a difficult job - or so I thought. Top bearing completely seized Bearing wouldn't come out of head tube and ceraming bearing not moving. Steerer must have been rotating within the headset bearing. Lower race was OK.
I wondered whether the head tube wasn't perfectly round (watched too much Hambini) and the bearing had been tapped into the tube when it was assembled so didn't attempt to remove it myself. Still in warranty so made sense to hand over to professional at this point.
LBS managed to sort it out but the bearing looks like it's been at the bottom of the sea. Will be doing more routine checking now rather than waiting for symptoms.
