I’m looking at buying a 2023 Orbea D40, but not sure about which frame size to get as I’m on the borderline of L and XL. I’m 189cm height, L says 180 to 190cm, and XL 190 to 200.

I currently ride a 2018 Giant Defy Advanced 2 which is size L, the charts for this bike show L for 185-195cm so I’m right in the middle and the bike is a good fit.

My gut feeling is to go for the XL Orbea as I hate riding a bike which feels too small, is this the best way to go?

It might help to mention the model as the geo varies by what type of bike it is. The D40 is the spec level.

I have a 57cm Orbea Orca D40 road bike and it fits me really well. I'm just shy of 6ft 2" for reference with average proportions. I'm used to gravel bikes and I was worried the stretched out position on the road bike would be a problem but the bars come pretty high as standard and the drop bar is a riser bar too so it wasn't an issue at all. The Stem is integrated so not much you can do with that but there's about 3cm of spacers to lower it if needs be.

One word of warning, the stock wheels on the D40 are as heavy as hell, a £150 set of fulcrum racing 5's dropped 1 kg off mine!

Oops I knew I’d forget something! I’m looking at going electric with a D40 Gain.

Thanks for the tip about wheels, I’ll definitely keep it in mind.

Try emailing them with your details. I did and got a reply pretty quickly much to my surprise!

You can’t change wheels on the gain as the hub motor is in the rear wheel. But as it’s an e-bike it’s not such a big deal. The gains geometry is a little more relaxed too so I’d go with the XL size, but if you can get a test ride or at least sit on the bike first.

Looking at the geo chart, how big are your feet as toe strike maybe an issue on the Large, especially if you are using clipless pedals. Will be ok on road tyres but if you start putting gravel tyres not so sure.

Thank you, great advice. I’m looking at a secondhand bike so can’t compare sizes in person, but I will try it for size before buying. My gut feeling is to go for the XL. I wear size 10 shoes, and I will be clipless on SPD-SL pedals so clearance is a consideration! It’ll be a road bike but would be nice to have the option of going gravel in future.
