Does anyone one else experience brain dead people randomly shouting at you? Or throwing stuff.

Last night peaked riding home after work. Clear road, Garmin says I was travelling at 25mph, from nowhere some youths had thrown what I think was a full 500ml bottle of oasis. Which hit me on the soft tissue in my ear drum area, hard enough to break the skin.

Que me blacking out momentarily and colliding with the curb. My leg is a mess, my arm is a mess, my hand is a mess. Have a pounding headache from the bottle impact. Bike is now full of scratches from the curb.

Absolute brain dead tts.

For some reason a lot of people look down on cyclists and believe they shouldn't be on the road. Plenty of them on ph.

The only way to deal with these tts is to drag them out of the car and give them a fking hiding.

They are are simply self entitled, arrogant cowards.

(I drive, cycle and ride bikes so see all sides of the argument).

(And no, I don’t really believe what I have written but wouldn’t it be good!).

If you “blacked out” after a hit to the head, and then binned it at 25mph, and the have headache the day after, you might want to get checked out. The bottle hit was hard enough to cause a problem. What’s to say you had a second whack that you can’t recall? Head injuries are nasty like that frown

yup first order of business get your head checked.

I try to stay off the roads and use my gravel bike but like all cyclists I've had idiots shouting abuse simply because I'm there. I even had one guy scream at me from a car whist I was stationary on the pavement! The majority of drivers are okay though, give you room and let you make progress.

The mainstream media has a lot to do with that. They seem to like painting the picture that cyclists are killing pedestrians right left and centre, running red lights and are sub human. Even though cars kill more people every day than cyclists do in a year.

It's why so many cyclists use cameras and report to police. It all starts with a close pass...

I’m don’t get abuse or things thrown, however when I have my daughter in the back it’s amazing how self centred some people are

That said, with my daughter on the back I see a big improvement from the vast majority, people hang back, pass wider and are a lot more patient

My outlaws get proper funny with cyclists, can’t really understand that it doesn’t really hold them up as there will still be a wait at the next junction regardless

Once a week or so back when I was cycling most days but usually just verbals from foetal alcohol syndrome candidates.

I've had a couple of things thrown at me over the years but luckily never been hit.

It's definitely getting worse too, not better.

I bought one of those radar detector rear lights that show when a car is approaching so now I can get left and let the cars pass. Especially useful if cycling two abreast means I can get out of the way in good time before the cars approach, great tech. That and avoiding any “primary position” nonsense has massively improved harmonious interactions with other road users.

I use a Varia too and agree they are a life saver. However I would encourage you to take primary position when it goes off, if the overtake puts you at risk. I often do if there is a central crossing island or the like and I'm gonna get pushed into the kerb if they overtake. You'd be amazed at how many idiot SUV drivers just barge past when there is simply no room. I do use it the other way though to make it easier for drivers to pass where its safe, or even bump onto the pavement if its a HGV and hes stuck behind me.

That's a sensible approach. I don't have the radar but I'm always very aware of what's behind me and try to let vehicles past if feasible, or occasionally block them completely where I'd be in danger if they tried.

On the subject of the thread, I was riding along the other week and some bloke in a car coming the other way took his time to lower his window and shout "" (C-word) very loudly at me. It wasn't someone I knew, so it was quite surprising smile

I don’t cycle. In the distant past, biggest issue was the parked cars (people opening doors without looking), leading to me taking evasive action numerous times.

As a car driver, can’t do much until it’s safe to overtake a cyclist/s. Just bide your time.

Sadly, we share the planet with some total dicks - they probably thought it was a bit of a laugh.

I suspect it's fairly rare. The worst I've had is a few shouts and there was one dick with smoky Golf who thought it was great sport to slow right down in front of me and then accelerate leaving me in a cloud of black smoke.

There are dick cyclists too - sadly this is the price we pay for having to share the planet with other people.

My favourite was the lady (I use the term loosely) who said I shouldn’t be on the road & go to a fking velodrome to cycle!

I loved the idea that 1) she knew what a velodrome was & 2) they built the velodromes so cyclists could do their cycling away from everyone else.

I should have suggested she go & drive at a race track…

I wasn’t quick enough on that occasion.

My wife rides horses.
I cycle.
The problem of abuse and lack of consideration has become worse.
I think a narrative of everything being a zero sum game, and a polarisation of society has driven this.

The 2m passing rule hasn’t helped either. A lot of times people won’t pass when they previously would have, backing traffic up & fraying tempers.

This happened recently. Presumably filmed by a Garmin Varia.

The oh so funny shout really loudly out of the passenger window is pretty frequent and can be unsettling

Worst I've had is youth hang out window and slap my arse with his shoe. Mates have had all sorts thrown at them including bottles of piss.

Did you bang your head when you went down? Is your helmet damaged, scratched, scuffed? I'd be cautious for a few days, you might have concussion and if you do knock your head again, it could cause secondary concussion. As for the tts in the car, a good hiding is what they need.

yes

I have quite a few car acquaintances who despite being seemingly right minded on most things, they have absolutely shocking attitudes towards cyclists.
