Any advice on Cycle Insurance?

Something I've not had before at all but considering it due to a new bike (5K) and starting to do group riding.
Not bothered for theft cover but I'd be very annoyed if I came off and wrecked it and I'm also thinking about my public liability.
I'd be mortified if I brought other riders down with me, although I'm not sure how the 'negligence' part works if they wanted their bikes replaced on my cover.

I did look at Cycleplan as they had a new customer offer and was about to FTK but then I looked at their Google reviews and fist was quickly retracted.

Seems to be about £350 with other providers. I'd also note I doubt I'd have more than 20 rides a year.

We use Sundays for it. Seem well priced and popular. Was easy to change bikes with them as well.

LAKA. Best by a country mile IME.

Not overall cheapest, but fair and lightning quick payouts.

My 2 bikes are with Yellow Jersey through Cycling UK. They’ve just changed their preferred insurer so will look elsewhere come renewal time.

No complaints. Seems good value. Decent discounts etc.

I'm also looking for a policy at the moment; if anyone is interested I've just been sent a 20% discount code for Sundays: COVERNOW20

I've been with Bikmo for 8 years or so now.

Pay a premium but when I crashed my 5k bike (during covid) I had a full pay out with no fuss within a week of submitting the claim.

I currently have 11k total and 8k on the road (max claim if I crash) insured with them (including racing) for around £65pm

No other companies came close to that and/or included as much cover as Bikmo (Laka etc)

Have you looked into adding it to your home insurance? Might work out cheaper than a standalone policy

Almost certainly, but try claiming and you'll lose a chunk of the claim value AND they won't cover you whilst you ride! (speaking from experience on both....)

You made the right choice. I should have said but I could have got you a 2 month free discount.

Mine does. Specifically says so too in the policy too. Aviva.

Also some of the costs people are stating for these standalone “lifestyle” policies are bonkers; they’re more - a lot more - than I pay for a couple of nice, very stealable, motorbikes that carry a relatively huge third party damage risk (not to mention what happens if you even drop it when stationary).

It is expensive, but then the assetts are - my insurance costs are in line with thecosts quoted above but thats for about 12 thousand pounds worth of extremely stealable bikes (far more so than a motorcycle), new for old, covers me whilst racing, acccidental damage, in the car, on holiday, if it falls off a chairlift, if someone runs it over, etc etc, a pretty sizable third party/public liability amount, medical cover etc etc.

I've not found a single home insurance policy that gets anywhere near the cover offered by the standalone products, and trust me, I've looked. Theres pages and pages of these discussions on bike forums.

Its expensive yes, but it hurts a lot less than if someone smashes my boot open and runs off with my trail bike in a Forestry Commision car park putting me about 7 grand out of pocket. Which is exactly the kind if thing that happens pretty regularly unfortunately.

I'm interested to see if Pedal Cover fall into that because it seems to be a hybrid home/bike policy.

Are you sure? It was Aviva that I specifically fell foul of when I was taken out on a sportive a few years ago.

Same, I pay £120/mth for 4 bikes with a combined value of c£25-30k, fully covered, any where, any country, any condition, riding or racing, new for old (updated if needed) - and a payout in under a week.

Somwhat irronically I don't have home Contents insurance and as I read it, that meant it was unlikley I could make the addition of cycles.

Living alone, low crime area, neighbours always home, proper CCTV and being a fastidious type, I didn't really see that much of a benfit to Contents. I've not a lot worth nicking and no single item that I'd be unable to replace easily. Fire or flooding would be a PITA but it's a low risk to me.

The standard of driving here, usually incompetent or sometimes deliberate dangerous acts, the number of potholes and poor road surfaces makes me far more concered that is where my highest risk is!
