Cyclists using CCTV warning signs
Discussion
Are these the latest 'w
ker detectors'?
I ride a lot, 10-12,000km/yr on the road, about the same on the turbo, lead group rides weekly, always respect the rules of the road and other road users and also don't get naturally upset if I'm held up by other cyclists/horses/tractors/etc when driving.
I also don't get issues whether on 2 wheels or 4 when on the opposite mode of transport (I suspect because I don't ride, nor drive like a c**t).
But I'm starting to see a greater amount of s
tty riding with those rider who not only have a rear-facing camera (especially bespoke camera, not just a Varia/similar rear warning thing) but couple it with a 'CCTV "I recording you"' sign, usually on their right hand jersey pocket.
Twice over the weekend, once whilst driving, once whilst riding, I came across riders who were riding anti-socially, wilfully blocking the road to prevent overtaking (when it was perfectly fine to do) and/or shouting obscenities at following cars pointing at the CCTV sign.
Chatting through to pals we rode with yesterday, after we all saw one of these riders, the opinion seems to be increasingly common, with one of the other riders saying that a club he rides with have banned rear facing cameras on group rides because of the behaviour it often elicits.
We have enough drivers hating us, wanting us off the road - we don't need greater antagonism.

I am intrigued by "the behaviour it often elicits". Do you mean that having a rear facing camera makes riders be more... c*ntish to put it politely?
That was my thought, put a little more bluntly. Maybe not the camera, but those that really wish to advertise the fact, almost as if to goad and capture it on video.Become the next Jez Vine perhaps.

That was certainly my experience when I used to cycle in London. People with cameras were usually the ones involved in altercations.
Same with cars, I often see badly driven cars equipped with cameras, especially so when they feel the need to advertise the fact.

1 - f

2 - a

Sad if it's migrating from 4 wheels to 2, there's already enough people that hate us already without the 2 % of true numpties goading people even more

I think when people start cycling, especially in cities they go through stages of behaviour.
These range from headphones, bewildered & overwhelmed, owning the road, paranoid that everyone’s out to get you, publicly appalled that everyone’s out to get you, disappointed that nobody is acknowledging that they’re the problem and you’re the solution, treating every journey like a TDF sprint, treating cycling as a way to prove your Alpha make-mess and many more.
If you’re unlucky you get stuck on one of these stages and end up with a YouTube channel to share your exploits.
If you’re lucky you end up realising that if you cycle sensibly and share the road you can make commuting slightly less s
t.

and on the flip side...
I was out on my road bike at the weekend. Pulled off the road onto the pavement for a few minutes for a breather and to get a drink. Whilst stationary on the pavement, a 4x4 flies past with the passenger leaning out the window screaming crap at me and waving his hands

I do have a Varia, maybe it was the flashing red light?

I considered cameras and signs just before I gave it up hoping that it would make people think twice before they acted. I think more antagonism is required personally.
