A drunk driver who hit a cyclist and inflicted life long injuries leaving him suffering from chronic pain was given just a £540 fine and a year ban.

Almost unbelievably 5 weeks after the crash his brother was killed while cycling around a mile away. What are the odds?! I know both roads well and wouldn't think twice about riding them.

Fatal crash on this road.

That road was a new build over empty farmland around 25 years ago. I would question why it wasn't built with a 6ft wide cycle lane either side it would have cost buttons and the fast stretch is just over a mile with no junctions or any buildings access to the road so it would have been simple to do.

It's actually a surprise he got jail time! If you look at sentences handed out to bad drivers, it really is depressing in this country. Nobody takes any pride in their driving, nobody thinks they should improve or develop, a miniscule portion of offenders actually get to court, and when they do, a reasonable lawyer and "exceptional hardship" is all it takes. And how many who get banned actually observe their ban?

Driving ban(as standard for drunk driving). No jail. Nothing extra for crippling a cyclist.

^^This^^. Irrespective of this particular incident, you've hit the nail firmly on the head. Got me licence, feck I'm perfect, get out of my way. It saddens me. My lad is 18 and learning to drive. I'm trying to impart my 53 years of experience onto him as well as the driving school, I was a bit of a clown in my younger days, don't think he will be, hopefully and don't want him to make the mistakes I made.

I'm not a cyclist, not really a fan of cyclists - but that (lack of) sentence... I want to say baffles me, it'd be nearer the truth to say infuriates me.

Even if the c-unit hadn't been drunk I'd have had him locked up, add in the DUI... I'm just lost for words weeping
