I've just bought a pair of OEM VW roof bars for my golf (£30 on ebay, bargain). I need to get bike carriers now, do I need to get VW ones or would others brands fit to? Do I need golf specific ones, or will they fit any car?

Very basic questions but not had a roof rack before!

Generally the oem roof racks are made by one of the big manufacturers.
If the profile is the fairly standard rectangular profile most racks should probably fit. If the aero type might need an adapter but again most things will fit.
If you put your car in here it will give an idea of what's available. Depending on the type of bike you can use different sorts. If it is something fancy the ones that clamp the wheels are good as they don't touch the frame.

If you're not in a rush probably worth having an eBay search set up as you've found they can be cheap on there. Picked up a nearly new tow bar rack for £10 a month or so ago and it looks like my old one is only going to go for about £25.
