Evening all,

I changed the chain on my mountain bike at the weekend and there seems to be some funny creaking noises when under load since. I've checked everything visually and can't spot anything obvious and I'm now wondering if the front chain ring needs changing, opinions on the picture below are welcome. It seems to be in every gear.
The chain ring has done approximately 2000 miles.

Thanks Dudley bloke (from a Stourbridge bloke).
I'll order a replacement and hopefully that'll sort it

I would imagine you’ll need a chain and cassette too. Might be worth seeing whether you can get away with it but I expect the chain will slip. A worn chain effectively gets longer due to link pin wear so only makes contact with one tooth at a time on the chainring.

The chain is new, I'll see how it goes with a new chain ring before buying a cassette

Worn chain rings don't generally creak. But loose ones do. Try slackening off and re-tightening all the bolts holding the chainring to the spider and see if that helps.

New ring should sort it, as others have said though, depending on how worn you let your chain get you might also need a new cassette....

That sounds exactly like the issue I have. I have a new chain ring arriving today which should sort it, hopefully can get away with the same cassette for a while longer.
If not, clearly this means I need a new bike!

You'll know straight away when it's skipping like a good'en but a good clue is when the teeth are looking like sharks teeth.
