Hello

My good lady wants an e-mtb. We’re looking to spend about £3k and I’d appreciate some recommendations!
We’re not really near any decent bike shops. We do a fair bit of off roading and bumpy tracks. Is this a decent starting budget?
Frame size she’d be a “Small”.

Whilst online bike shopping earlier I’ve strayed away from anything with SR Suntour forks - are they as bad as they used to be? When I liked bikes as a youth Suntour forks were, umm rubbish!
I like the look of the Whyte e504, and budget creep has had be looking at Canyon Neuron:ON 6… But I’m going round in circles and could do with a kick up the backside/some guidance.

The Suntour XCM forks are still widely used on 2K+ ebikes and are indeed utterly rubbish. But don't let that put you off, a budget set of Rockshox recon or Judys can be had on wiggle for about £140 and as long as you keep the same specs it won't void your warrenty.

£3K will get you a nice cube reaction hybrid pro with change for goodies. Bomb proof bike, bosch mid motor and 625wh battery. The pro has X-fusion Air forks, they are a bit better than the Suntour's but would still be my first upgrade. I've got one and its been great, the only watch out is they are heavy, mines an XL and its about 26kg.

Suntour do quite a wide range, from real budget end to decent performing and good VFM stuff. Not sure their midrange is any better or worse than the typical Rockshox Recon/Judy/35 you can also get at this price.

I'd always recommend getting what your local shop stocks purely because warranty issues are common and it's a lot easier to just drop it off, than to package up a whole bike or remove a motor to post back. That said anything Shimano can be done at any Shimano service centre if you've bought a direct brand. Don't know if that goes for Bosch and others.

I'm not convinced about eMTB hardtails like the e504. Most of the weight of a FS ebike, slack and long for the steeper stuff - but would be hard work to finesse down rougher tracks, and if you try to plough through stuff you're just going to break wheels. The Canyon looks excellent for the money though.
