Hi all

I'm trying to replace some tyres for my daughter's street bike for her to take to Uni, unfortunately the sizes were embossed on a sort of fabric "white wall" on the tyre and has mostly worn away. Can you help me decode the numbers so I can buy some correctly sized replacements?

I've measured the diameter of the rim as being 25" as close as I can call it, and 1" wide. The existing tyre is about 1 6/8" wide when inflated.

The bike is a Dawes Street Life of uncertain vintage, but I've found an old catalogue that lists it as having 700 x 28c touring centre-rib tyres. I'm pretty sure these ones on the bike are original. These numbers might correlate with a second set of numbers on the tyre, as far as I can make out. The tyre brand/model appears to be Schalbe Scout, but I can't find much about them.

Short question: can I just buy some 700 x 28c street-oriented tyres and expect them to fit OK?

many thanks

28” x 1 5/8” is a defunct imperial size broadly equivalent to 700 x 35c in Metric.

They are to all intents & purposes interchangeable.

Everything you need to know is here.

https://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html

It’s a minefield that if you don’t know the history of the nomenclature it makes no sense at all.

Easiest thing to do is take the bike / tyre to Halfords etc. and line new tyres up with the old one.

Thanks all. Been on a bit of a learning curve re bike tyre sizes. I’ve ordered some 700 x 35c with new tubes to replace. Also managed to find some parts which will hopefully fix a mudguard stay which was loose and frayed the originals. All I needed for that was an M6 sized nut but the thread appeared to be very odd.

Cheers anyway!
