Ian's 2023 Tour
Discussion
I'm on the road for a month starting Saturday. Thought I'd post the odd pic on a thread here. I won't get wifi every day but I'll try and post a pic a day or thereabouts when I can catch up. Rather than say where I'm going I'll post an old pic from when I finished a tour at the starting point of this tour.
Should be obvious to everyone I think.
Come to think this pic is within a week of exactly a decade ago.

Day Zero, Glasgow to San Francisco
There is no way round it. Scotland to the West Coast of the USA is a long day. Up at 6:30am. A short hop from Glasgow to Heathrow then a layover of 2 hours plus until my 2:05pm flight. I could have booked a Glasgow flight a bit later but I wanted to give British Airways the best chance I could to successfully transfer my bike from the Glasgow aircraft to the one bound for San Francisco.
The 90 minutes delay sitting in the plane at Heathrow while they found a tug to pull us away from the dock didn't help. Checked in at the hostel at 0600 UK time 23 hours after leaving home.
Bike assembly at 4am UK time can be a faff. An awkward pedal thread which needed cleaned out by screwing the pedal in from the wrong side first the worst bit. 50 minutes to go from the first pic to the second.

How many miles are you covering each day?
Varies. Average 50 for the month including any rest days. So a bit over 50 for riding days. Planned rest day in Santa Monica thereafter will depend on miles. If I am getting ahead of a rough schedule I'll spend two nights somewhere. The odd spot in Malibu needed care as parked cars or roadworks removed the shoulder. The only driver that tooted his horn because I was using the inside lane to pass a blocked shoulder had a bike rack on his car!

Other riding varied. From long sections of separate bike path to roads like this in Santa Barbara. Old Highway 1 now almost empty with a freeway bypass.

Top work! Are you on strava?
Not on Strava. Relatively unconnected as my phone, a One Plus Nord, and provider - Three are getting no signal anywhere. Updates are when I get WiFi which as I am camping most nights is pubs or McDonald's. I'm, posting the odd pic and update here. Full version at
