I’m not a huge fan of super-loud rear hubs, I think makes harder to hear traffic when I’m on roads (a sad necessity occasionally).

Any recommendations for slightly quieter rear hubs? I know you can theoretically pack noisier hubs with grease but tbh I’ve never found it makes that much of a difference.

For reference I’ve been riding on Hope Pro4 and some Hunt wheels, both of which are quite loud! After some lightweight 29” wheels.

It seems to be a fashion thing, doesn't it.

I remember back in the 90s I borrowed a bike from a racer and the hub was silent. The gear shifts were also perfect and, again, virtually silent. It was lovely. Just seamless power transfer and coasting.

A sprag clutch hub is silent. Bit spendy mind.

Aren't Shimano XTR hubs meant to be pretty quiet? Would meet the criteria of being lightweight if so although I think they only come in MicroSpline and centrelock which could be a problem and I have heard of some creaking issues.

If you want to spend some money look up Tairin hubs....

Think you're looking for dt swiss ratchet hub, if you regularly grease them they are pretty quiet. Imo they are really easy to maintain too as it's such a simple mechanism, pawl hubs have lots more moving parts.

Might also want less engagement points, I think the more there are the more sound they are going to make.

Fewer points of engagement is a double edged sword though. Makes for clunkier uptake through the pedals if that's the sort of thing that bothers you. I have a bike with a Race Face hub that's pretty quiet compared to my other bikes. Not sure if that's by design or not but I like it.

Garmin Varia radar might be cheaper than new wheels?

We all ride on Hope hubs - noisy yes but pretty bullet proof and I'm happy swap that for a bit of noise.

Also handy in a group hearing someone just behind you when you're about swing across the trail into another rut/better line.

I agree with the OP, I really dislike noisy hubs, and some are just ridiculous.

Shimano hubs seem pretty quiet as do Bitex. I did have a set of Fulcrum wheels with super quiet hubs - don’t know what the hubs were and the wheels (and the bike they were attached to) has now been nicked so …

I prefer a noisier hub especially where there's loads of dosey pedestrians around, I've never found them noisier than most traffic, electric cars aside.

A easier fix would be to keep pedalling?

Or just add a bell if pedestrians are your problem.

Got one of those, plus lights. You'll be surprised how clueless some can be.

Thanks all, will take a nose and see what I can find based on these suggestions. Sadly some of the higher priced recommendations are well out of my price range wink

I have DT Swiss hubs as part of an M900 wheelset and would describe them as medium loud, not as loud as hope pro2 for example. I do find the lower number of pickup points a slight issue.
My Nukeproof horizon v2 hubs are deliciously/obnoxiously loud! One to avoid for the op, although they do seem a very good wheelset.

Thought it would just be tight technical stuff (north shore boardwalks and right switchbacks) where the engagement points are an issue?
Think the ones on my bike are 36 teeth and haven't noticed but haven't directly compared to something else, grease keeps them quiet though.

I got a set of Nukeproof Horizon wheels on an e-bike a recently bought which I swapped straight away with some Hunt's without even trying them. Recently picked them up to have a nosey at them and did a freehub sound check and OMG!

102 teeth of noisy goodness that are def going on one of my bikes now that I know they make that racket!
