We are downsizing so need to get rid of some stuff. Currently have three bikes.

A 25 year old Carrerra rigid MTB from Halfords (26" wheels 3x7 gearing), a 2018 Giant Rapid (flat bar road bike, 3x8 Claris, disc brakes) and a Giant Contend (2x11 105, disc brakes)

Wife also had an MTB that she hasn't ridden in 20 years.

Hers is being sold (if it doesn't sell it will go to the Salvation army shop).

I was going to sell the Carrera but while cleaning it up yesterday it dawned on me that both Giant's are road bikes and the only one that I can really use off road is the Carrera. I remember the store reminding me that it wasn't designed to be ridden off road when I collected it. The two Giants have differing gearing (Same at top end but Rapid is much lower at the bottom end)

Outcome is that the Rapid is for sale and I am keeping the Carrera and the Contend - wife still annoyed because she thought I would be left with one. I must be doing something right because yesterday afternoon she thought I only had two bikes, not three!

I know I am doing it wrong, (n+1) but other than that are there any holes in the logic?

I must try "follow the dog" before we move, it is only half a mile away from home.

If you want to go mountain biking get something newer. £600 now will get you something that would be way more fit for purpose.

I remember what Halfords bikes were like 25 years ago. You’d have more fun just dragging a lump of pig iron up a hill.

What sort of off-road riding do you intend to do? If you can get 30mm or wider tyres on the road bike, it'll cope just fine with general off road stuff, so gravel/canal paths not a problem - for example, they're trying (and until they take the tyres off, failing) to kill some road wheels here: https://youtu.be/2NnMtqUSW_w?t=376

Apart from the bits between the sections or the blue "perry's trail" bit none of the bikes you have would be suitable for the trails at Cannock chase.

Maybe but at least this one has an alloy frame - far lighter than the wife's steel framed bike.

The intended use is more gravel than the real rough stuff, I would take it down some of the trails I wouldn't chance the Rapid on.

Sell all 3, get a gravel bike and a spare set of wheels with road tyres.

1 new bike which can do nearly everything, you happy, wife happy smile

Proving difficult to sell anything, the Rapid has gone for 150 and hers is relisted on Gumtree for 20 - if that fails either I ride it down to the charity reuse deposit point or I strip it of tyres, inner tubes, brake blocks etc (which will fit the Vulcan) and scrap the rest
