I think it’s the rim that will make the most difference to the ride feel or any aero gains (assuming road?) so seems a slightly pointless step- you might not feel any difference. It’s adding two lots of labour and the spokes will be a different length on a deeper rim.

Hope make great hubs, but I'm not convinced by their rims (I'm not even sure that Hope make them themselves). So when I have made to make up new wheels for my MTB I have always gone for Hope hubs and DT Swiss rims (bought from my LBS).

The hub is an irrelevance in terms of speed.

Depth and drag in aero terms will entirely blow bearing gains out of the water. Even ceramic speed themselves only claim single figure watts with their products.

You’d do well to read up on where difference comes on bikes when spending money. Obviously most of it is the rider, as ever but there’s value in some things and not in others. Bearings at huge expense are in the ‘st value camp. But riding at a decent level you’d know that.

Speed is going to be found in the rim, yes. Decent hubs are usually judged on weight and durability vs drag. Hope/DT Swiss and many others make great hubs. You can always replace bearings in the future if you feel the need but I’d be amazed if the difference was more than 1-2w between really bad and really good once it’s got 80+kg of weight behind it.

There will be endless tests online. I’d imagine tyres are as important per rim. There was watts of savings back in the day of matching a specific tyre to a specific rim on tests done by an old coach of mine (Xavier Disley). But ultimately most of the gains even sound modest when talking about improvements over a 40km TT at 45kph. Let alone just riding about in the lanes.
