Evening everyone,

Went to take my front wheel off tonight to test fit a front guard and the bolt seems stuck and pushes one side of the fork out. Any tips how to get this out?

bike in question is a Specialized diverge sport is it makes a difference

TIA

Last time mine did that I pushed the fork out a bit, then ttted it back in with a rubber mallet. Through axle came out then…

I had this recently with my Formula Selva and it was a nightmare. Not entirely sure what caused it, just seized up overnight and when trying to undo it just made horrendous squeeking noises and like yours, pushed the lowers apart.

I ended up having to take my disc pads out to alleviate as much contamination as possible then just going to town with the GT85, cranking the axle back and forth then more GT85, got it out eventually but it was a work out.

The only thing i'd done differently was use some Peatys assembly grease on it and I wonder whether that was it, something about the grease acting almost like a gripping compound....

Ok update, so used a long drill bit and used the opposite end and put it through the axle and tap tap tap away for 5/10min and it popped out, white corrosion so cleaned it up and then put some bio grease on it and put it back in.

Bikes been a nightmare this year, one thing after another.

Could be worse...

I had one (on the rear) once on a new bike that the shop had cranked mega tight when assembling the bike - first time I tried to remove the wheel for a tyre change took so much force it slipped and rounded out the hex fitting in the axle!

Ended up getting the bike shop to deal with it, they might have drilled it out but either way it needed a new axle. They covered half the cost admitting it was very tight but suggesting some operator error on my part as well.

I realised some weeks/months later that instead of my normal tools I had accidentally used one of those throw-away allen keys that comes provided with kitset furniture etc for assembly, being a piece of junk the tool had deformed under pressure until it slipped and burred out the hex in the axle.

Yes that isn’t a good start at all, I am lucky
That I managed to get this one back out, had no luck recently with the bike.

I always use a multi tool for the bike and a torque wrench.

Glad you got it sorted. I’m old so always put a thin skim of copper grease on thru axels & pedal threads.

Appreciate that, I am also, I use the bike daily so could afford to not be without it.

I have some Muc-off eco grease so put some of that o. The axle and the threads.
