My lads current bike is broken, a 20” wheeled specalized rock hopper and it’s a bit small for him now.

Ideally I was looking at getting him a second hand islabike creig 26 but I missed out on one locally at sensible money and the rest are £600+ for an old style one.

I have seen a whyte 403 at £600 new (I missed one of these also at £300 second hand) and a vitiate nucleus 26 at £430. Both look pretty decent and hopefully will help him gain confidence when we go to sherwood pines for a thrash round.

Is there anything else on the market I should be looking at? Ideally £600 is the maximum I would be looking at spending.

I’m going to say that is too big for him. He isn’t a big lad at 28kg ish and just because the frame is small, the bars and levers etc are all going to be adult sized. Same with the forks, they won’t do a thing with him on it.

To be fair I thought it might be a push.

My wife is 5ft and has a compact Whyte adult frame and it's not too far off my daughter's 26 403.

I went with the Nucleus 26, at 136cm he was on the lower end of the size chart but if I went 24 he’d outgrow it in months.

It’s a really decent bike, air shocks, hydraulic discs and functional 1x8 Box gearing. It’s lighter than the Whyte 403 too.

My only concern was crank length, they seemed long on the spec but he is getting on fine with it in the woods and trails (Ashton Court).

Can highly recommend the Vitus. Had one for my 8-10 year old (till he grew!). Insanely cheap new due to over supply.

See also orange segment 26, and Whyte.

We've just ordered a Specialized Rockhopper XS for our 10 year old.

Originally we were going to go for the Specialized Jett, but we were advised by the guy in the shop that the frame looked and bit small for him (141cm), and that we'd get more use out of the Rockhopper as it has 27.5 inch wheels rather than 24 inch.

We got a Vitus for ours when he was maybe 7. Brilliant bike for the money, and very light.

This thread timing was perfect!

I bought my son a second-hand Specialized Hotrock 24" a few years ago and we did a fair bit of riding during lockdown whilst it was quiet.

He's been nagging me to get back out on his bike so we went out on Monday and it was clear he'd outgrown it.

My friend bought his son an Orbea Laufey but it was close to £1k which is a bit rich so thanks to you I've just placed an order with Wiggle for the Vitus Nucleus 26", looks great value for money!

Problem now is I've fallen down a rabbit hole of looking at a new bike for myself....

I bought my tall nine year old a second hand Vitus nucleus. Pretty sure it’s 26 in wheels.

It was a year old. Advertised at 300 and bought for 250. I’m very impressed, rock shox and hydraulic discs, big nobblies … sram 1x It’s unstoppable. Previously he had isla bikes but I think this is a good move at that age and size.

I saw last year’s model for sale new at 475 recently. I think it’s great for the money.

Looking back at the OP, I see he’s seen new for 430. A bargain. I reckon.

That Whyte that lllNorislll posted looks great. - just checking for stock in large …

The Vitus Nucleus seems like a good bike - an upgrade from that would be the Nukeproof Cub Scout, which is built a bit more like a "real" MTB, with bolt through axles etc. There were some good deals on these recently.

I'm on a similar hunt for a 26"/27.5” wheel MTB for my 9 year old son who has outgrown his 24” Whyte 303. I'm currently speaking to someone about a second hand Nucleus 26, but if that falls through I might just order a new one as they look great VFM. I've also been considering XS 27.5 bikes as a pal who owns a bike shop has a XS Rockhopper in stock for £425, but it comes with a coil fork which I would want to change for a lighter and more adjustable air one, so that bumps the cost up, and I would also ditch the 2x set up for 1x10 (but I have most of the parts I need in the garage for this).

And for some reason now chain reaction/wiggles website are down so nothing can be ordered.

I bought my 9 year old a canyon ‘grand canyon young hero’ in XXS - it’s a full 27.5 wheel bike with 100mm od travel. Fits him at 140 without a problem and should last quite a few years. Only slight negative is that it’s kinda impossible to fit a decent water bottle.

Most bikes seem to be sold out now.

It’s looking like a Whyte 403 is going to be the only option.

It arrived yesterday so had to take him to the park to give it a roadtest.
