New company I joined recently has a rather generous limit on the Bike2work scheme (coming from the £1k limit at my last place).

Even though it's only really been 7m since I got the last one, very tempted and starting to look at the different options. I currently have 2 bikes - both from Halfords using the Cycle2Work scheme.

  1. Boardman ADV 8.9 2021 - first proper bike I had and its generally been great. Liked the comfortable geometry and running on fat tyres
  2. BirdBike eBike - this is the one I got around 7m ago and ever since I've had it, I think I've used the Boardman less than 5 times. Currently doing around 80-120km every week on this and it's really fun. Makes the stop/start and hilly areas a lot easier and more fun, and I'm not constantly getting dropped by other riders! Just the range on this is a little shorter than I would now like, and without the battery assist - it's a heavy bike (23ish kgs).
For the next one, these are the things I'd ideally like:
  • Carbon frame
  • eBike with a decent range - 70m+ if doable? BirdBike maxes out at about 40m really which is starting to feel a little short now (at the lowest assist setting)
  • Like the look of the road bike with dropped handlebars
  • Shimano 105 as a minimum
  • Hydraulic disc brakes
  • Below 15kg ideally
If I can keep it around £2.5k that'd be even more awesome so I can put the extra £500 towards a turbo trainer that the ADV 8.9 will go on.

I've heard of people putting accessories on cycle2work but a trainer seems like a bit of a stretch!

How does this scheme work?
Who's paying for it?

My understanding was that you could put whatever you wanted (retailer willing) in a single transaction - up to the max limit. I know of people who have put accessories and cycling bibs/gilets etc through. Maybe a trainer would be a stretch!

employer provides cash as a voucher for retailer, you pay back at source saving tax liability.

I was told it was accessories to go with the bike.

A turbo trainer with an ebike that is supposed to be used primarily for cycling to work is pushing it.
