I have a Whyte 901 (bought 2010) that came with SRAM X9 rear derailleur (with X5 triggers) 10 speed - that got replaced 30months ago with a GX rear derailleur.

Anyway, triggers broke so took apart to fix. After fixing the trigger (which now clicks up/down as expected) and new cable, the RD would not shift to smallest cog (although could push cage and then it would). It would also struggle to get to biggest cog, when it went down it would go down 2 cogs, not 1.
Anyway, after many attempts (I know how to do this btw) of indexing and ensuring limit screws/B-screw all correct, it just wouldn’t play ball. RD doesn;t appear bent, nor does the hanger so maybe it’s the spring losing tension?

Anyway, still had the old X9 and gave that a good loosening up and penetrating spray etc and fitted that. That DID index and work much better so OK for now.

However, I suspect it will need replacing soon anyway as not convinced it will last that long.

So, what should I replace it with? I can’t find a new X9 anywhere, plenty of GX but given last one only lasted just over 2 years whereas the X9 lasted 10 years, I’m reluctant to get a GX.

Any suggestions as to what is SRAM “real” replacement for the X9? Or suggestions to a decent replacement? (Open to a 11 speed but would mean new shift/triggers if not too expensive. Given old triggers played up, may be good idea to replace them as well anyway….

OK but which? I assume would need associated trigger/shifters too?

Deore is more than adequate, but SLX or XT are very slick.

Plenty on eBay if you’re happy to go used.

The key is to understand what derailleurs have the same ratio of "mm of cable pull" to "mm cog spacing" to suit the shifters you are using.

It is well confusing and I suggest checking with authoritative websites like Sheldon Brown, rather than getting third hand info.

A derailleur doesn't know anything about number of speeds, it just moves x-amount across when you pull or ease y -amount of cable.
A shifter has so many notches and pulls z-amount of cable with every notch.
Unless it's campag, when it can be non linear.

When people mix mtb, road and 'gravel' parts, and different brands, it's quite opaque.

For further confusion, you can get gismos which go in the cable run to alter the ratio.

Does having a programmable electronic rear mech seem the sensible easy way out yet? :-)

I have a Whyte 901 too from 2010 or 2011 (can't remember). I've done thousands of miles on it now although it's a bit of a Trigger's broom. There are few original components left on it but I'm happy to say the original rear X9 and lever are still working well (the front was removed when I went 1x). In fact, I only replaced the shifter cable last year for the first time.

If you're throwing away your rear mech and lever, gimme a shout - I'll pay the postage. [/cheeky bd]
