Shimano Claris 3x8 flat bar shifter issue

I have a Giant Rapid flat bar road bike with claris 3x8. Last Monday out on a ride it stopped shifting at the front, lever and telltale moved but the derailleur stayed on the big ring. Later in the ride it started working again. Lubricated the derailleur and all seemed to be working properly.

Worked fine on the rides (30km) Wednesday, and Friday although the small ring is rarely used now.

Today it was back to the lever and telltale moving but not the derailleur, just when I needed the middle ring for the hill back home!.

I thought last week the cable would have snapped but it hadn't and it started working again, I am expecting to change the cable but is there anything else \I need to look at?

Had the bike for just over 4 years and this cable has done 6k km in all weathers.

I would change the cable and housing. After the time and miles in all weather it is due. If that doesn't cure it then start looking for other causes.

Stripped it down and cable is very sticky, ordering a replacement cable. Had me puzzled because it was an intermittent fault.

It was sticking at the bar end, not the derailleur end, needed pliers to pull the cable out. Then found the Lifeline kit I bought when the rear cable was changed but the spare outer isn't there - bugger!
