Ok so changed friends chain on their ebike. Its 10 speed so watched many YouTube vids on how to do it and all those I watched said it's critical to order a chain designed for your bike (ten speed in this case) and also said that the chains always come too long so be prepared to remove links etc.

OK so ordered chain but its about 5 links shorter than the last despite the videos saying chains are always too long when they come. Anyway lesson learnt I should have counted how many links old chain was etc. Anyway the chain is fitted with my friend having strict instructions not to go anywhere near the biggest cog (lowest gear) til I get a new chain as something will break as in the second lowest gear the derailleur is horizontal and there is no more give so something will break if she does go into that lowest gear (biggest cog). The chain I need must have at least 121 links.

The last chain had snapped as not replaced for 3000 miles. Must admit I haven't cycled in 40 years and all the bikes I had as a kid rusted away long before the chain failed, never heard of a chain snapping.

Anyway the reason for this diatribe is a question: The chain is a Shimano and it comes with a pin you insert and then break off. I appreciate the pin goes in the leading end of a link and the writing on the chain must face outwards but what I am not clear on is which side you push the pin in from? I pushed it in the side of the chain with writing on (the outside) and then broke it off on the inside. Is that correct? TY

Additional question: If I have to remove some links from a chain, do I push the pin out from the inside or outside? TY
