Hi Forum,

I have an Edge Explore that won't charge / power on. I've contacted Garmin re. repair, but assuming that they're extortionate - can anyone recommend a Garmin repairer?
Thanks in advance!

Maybe wrong as it was a few years ago, but I’m sure garmin had a fixed price repair scheme in place, a quick look at their website will confirm.

Although in looking just at site can’t see anything now, I suggest google is your friend

It’s about £100 for a fixed price non-warranty repair (you get a refurbed unit). They were good when my Forerunner got run over many years ago (thankfully not on my wrist at the time!)

I was in a similar position recently with my Garmin edge 520, the battery was going flat after an hour or two. I did a bit of research and found a few (to be honest, dodgy looking) companies offering repairs and even considered buying the kit to replace the battery myself.

I found a few old posts online about Garmin repairs but they were 7 years+ old and seemed expensive.

Garmin have recently reduced the price of the Edge 530, after shopping around and using a few discount codes I got a new 530 for less then £130.

It made more sense to buy a (heavily discounted) new unit rather than trying to repair an old one, I also got a few extra features.

Not used them but this place was recommended to me from a friend - seems to be £30 for battery replacement and recent reviews show they are still fixing things.

Similar to above post - I got a new model when my 520 battery died. Fully recommend the 530 for newer features like climbpro etc..

I have an old Edge 800 that needed a new battery. I did it myself in about 10 minutes with a cheap battery from Amazon.

Aye I’d DIY if it was just a battery replacement - but it could be the port, or the battery, or something else - unit is essentially inert right now!
The 800 is also screwed together, whilst the Explore is a “warm it up and pry” which soda law I’d crack the screen smile

I’ll probably use the link above for 40-50 quid, assuming that the Garmin option is extortionate…

I'll mirror previous advice youve been given which is that they will swap a dead unit for a refurb for a very reasonable sum or alternatively wait for their direct flash deals which usually carry 50% discounts on selected units - you need to be quick though

My old 500 went under a bus (dont ask) and was replaced with what looked like a new unit and when that ones battery died after many years I bagged an 830 for half price

Cheers

I had to repair my 1000 when the on off button collapsed. Got a replacement off ebay, on which the USB port was duff, so they then sent me that too. Both were easy to swap, took me under 10 minutes.

Not a difficult job to fix generally if you have the little torx.

To close this one out:

Put details into Garmin site, requested quote.
They replaced it for free.

I was amazed - I think I've had it almost 2 years, and I bought it 2nd hand off ebay!

Obvs very happy with them for that, to top it all off the app I bought the Explore specifically for (tile hunter) actually works on this one (it only "sort of " worked on the last one, it'd forget all new tiles found when you turned it off)..

Still thanks to all contributors, its appreciated =)

I've had a Garmin Edge 800 for 8 or 9 years now. I've always upload routes and downloaded ride info using a MacBook Pro. 3 or 4 months ago it stopped connecting. I assumed a cable issue and bought a new one from Garming. Didn't resolve the issue. Contacted Garmin and they suggested that the new cable maybe be faulty and replaced the cable FoC. Still not connecting.

In the meantime I've been using the Garmin so I can see the ride details whilst riding but using Strava on my phone. I was contemplating buying a new Garmin when, reading this discussion, I decided to contact Garmin and see if they could repair the device. In a chat exchange I was told that if the Garmin is connected via a dongle rather than direct, then it won't connect. I tried connecting it directly to my sons PC, low and behold it connects and works prefectly!

I asked Garmin if I could buy a USB-C to USB Mini so I could connect the device directly to my Mac. No is the answer frown Really? How ridiculous! I've just ordered one off Amazon, hopefully that works.

Just posting in case anyone else has this issue (odd that it worked perfectly fine connecting via a dongle for years and then suddenly stopped - I've not had USB on my Mac for 3 or 4 years)
