Having just bought a bike for one of my sons this Christmas, I now have a struggle fitting a rear light that can be seen by following vehicles, as the rear wheel is large, and the seat is rather low (by design).

Having looked around on-line, there are no obvious frame mounted rear lights. Any ideas?

You can get lights that will mount on the saddle rails but it's hard to tell from the angle of your pic if that would still be blocked by the rear tyre. I've got an exposure in this position but it may be too expensive for a kids bike... Otherwise a long strip-type light on the seat stays would probably be your best option

Fibreflare can mount just about anywhere including the seatstay.

Else look for ones that use the silicone ring type mounts that have some articulation - I know Moon do.

Or to be honest, given how wide a pattern and how bright most rear LEDs are now, just mount on the seat post and there should be plenty of red light getting out. I actually mount mine on my MTB pointing down a bit so it’s not so blinding for those following on night rides but is fine for road.

Could you not affix one to a helmet, if he has one?

When my kids were younger I had the same problem. My solution was for them to wear light vest/tabard, they had orange light on the front and red on the back. On one of them you could set the lights to blink on and off.
I still mounted a light on the rear of the bike.

You want one of these :

With a saddle frame mount :

I have been through 3 different rear lights, and the TL200 is the only one I have found that is both bright and has a reliable and dependable battery life.

I use an Exposure TraceR light under my saddle using their saddle rail bracket.

My son has a helmet from BBB which has a fitting for a rechargeable rear light (also from BBB obviously and which can also be mounted all the usual ways).

Whilst we also use a normal rear light for him, the higher-level light is excellent.

You could try the rear version of these: https://reelight.com/products/sl100-series
No batteries to worry about, either. However, wrong side really for the UK and the mounting position may be vulnerable to damage on a kid's bike. Also, technically too low for a legal bike light.
I guess you could bodge a bracket on to the other side of the axle to hold a small normal light?

Or, this light has white on the front and red at the back: https://www.merlincycles.com/moon-aerolite-front-r...
Although it's shown on a drop bar there, it can be mounted at 90' and the manufacturer's site shows it on MTBs: https://moon-sport.com/product/aerolite/

You could possibly mount that out on the offside end of the bars; it would get plenty of movement too to catch driver's eyes (I use Moon's drop bar end lights on my road bike for this).

X-Lite 100. I have the seat mount version shown which attaches to the seat rails. All the usual flash/pulse type modes plus a brakelight function which actually works.
