My Pearl Izumi gloves are worn out and I need a new winter pair.

Any recommendations on a decent glove with palm padding for MTB rides, reasonable insulation and preferably waterproof (to the extent that they ever really are!).

Budget up to £50.

Thanks

The best winter gloves I've ever used, even in significant sub-zero riding, are the Spatz 'Thrmoz'.

They are over budget and more geared for road use, but I've used dozens of 'deep winter' gloves, and these, despite being thinner, are by far the best.

My favourites are a pair of 100% Brisker's that are a UK specific winter MTB glove. Regular palm padding but with a thick winter backing so that you get max warmth with minimal loss of feel.

Sealskinz. Specifically these ones...

Have never let me down. Windproof, waterproof and very durable.

Great stuff thanks, went for the Briskers.

Cheap at just over £20 delivered - can't go wrong at that!

Yeah after posting I had a google and found they've come down in price quite a bit, might buy a spare pair...

Let us know what you think. I've always found winter gloves too restrictive but these seem to get things spot on.

I tend to wear a pair of Nitrile gloves underneath for extra warmth/protection on the wetter colder rides as well.

The Lusso Windtex gloves always get good reviews on tests, had a set for a few seasons and they are still going strong.

Cheap and warm, still going strong. The outer coating flakes off a bit but that doesn’t seem to affect their performance.

Got the Briskers gloves but TBH I'm disappointed - a very small fit and literally no padding or insulation. I got cold fingers just walking the dog. They'd be fine in the Summer/Autumn but a winter glove they ain't

I rode on Wednesday night in my ski gloves which just about worked though it was -10!

Today I picked up some Crane branded winter bike gloves from Aldi as I was passing the middle aisle, nice and padded, gel palms and really comfy. £6.99!

Obviously not Reusch quality but neither were they over £100

I'll try them this week and report back but at that price definately worth a punt. If they get me through this winter I'll be well pleased.

That surprises me about the Briskers, they're mine and a mates 'go to' winter glove.

I've tried all sorts in the past and always found anything chunkier way too restrictive, especially on the palm where you can end up with no grip or brake lever feel. Suppose we all have different needs and preferences though...

I have a pair of Rapha Winter gloves (£80), pretty good in terms of keeping fingers toasty.

As a cheap fix, try adding some silk inner gloves, these are meant to be effective (Amazon have them for £10-12 a pair)

I bought some Briskers as everyone raves about them and found them rubbish in anything less than 5 degrees. I have an old set of the seal skinz winter and a set of the Spesh sub zeros and those 2 are so much better. It was so cold last week even the Sub zeros weren't coping so I was in my old snowboarding gloves. Very toasty. smile

I also bought a pair of Briskers on the basis of this thread. They are more snug to get on than I anticipated but fit well. I've only worn them to go delivering Christmas cards round the village so far, though, and didn't find them very good at keeping me warm doing that. Probably more for spring wear than winter, I'd say. I shall definitely use them for that and stick to my Lidl/Aldi cheapos which kept me perfectly cosy cycling in the snow.

It was a brisk -11 for my 8-mile ride to the station on Sunday. The snot was freezing in my nostrils.

Anyway, I can confirm that thin silk undergloves and cheap old Planet X lobster mittens will keep your hands warm at those temperatures. No problems at all.
