Cycle storage in an empty shop unit

Sick of bikes in Newport getting stolen, this guy found an old empty shop and turned it into a cycle storage place. Somewhere like this in Bristol would make a killing and I guess spokesafe deal with branding, the membership app etc

I think they are manned, not sure as the website isn’t great. Thus you can’t just go in with an angle grinder and help yourself….
I’d bet they get a fair few subscribers at £20 a month though and there probably aren’t that many £1 a day users who get a space if members can book in advance.
There’s a place on Skinner Street which is £6500 rent pa, if you did repairs, sold spares like lights, tubes etc and added a little coffee machine, you could easily make a living off that.

Yes, maybe. It was the comment at the top about making a killing. Once you factor in insurance, tax, rates, etc and it says 24/7 access so assume a coded entry at times (looks like one on door), I don’t think one shop would ever make you any real big profit. The shopping centre in Worcester has secure bicycle parking with a repair station in an unused shop unit. The centre provides the space and got some grants for setting it up:

It’s a good idea, can see why many would use it particularly with most c2w schemes having a high limit now and e-bikes being used to commute.
I’d guess the shop is given up as a free/cheap space though, saves on having another vacant unit on the high street.
Our office has this for staff (free) but space for an around 150 bikes in the basement, plus a self serve workshop and drying room.
Probably the most secure place in town to keep a bike.
It is nice to rock up to work, get showered, changed and go to your desk not having that little feeling of will it still be there later.

Wow, that sounds like the way to encourage people to ride. Brilliant idea for cities.I’d guess the shop is given up as a free/cheap space though, saves on having another vacant unit on the high street.

It's a good idea so I hope they can stack it up. I would have used that when I was commuting, regularly and I would use it now for shopping.
Secure bike parking is a growing issue, it's practically impossible to stop a determined thief from nicking a bike from the street if they want to, however it is locked up.

40 bikes x £1 day x 365 days = £14600 income (unrealistic as full occupancy every day)I’d bet they get a fair few subscribers at £20 a month though and there probably aren’t that many £1 a day users who get a space if members can book in advance.

Less £6500 rent leaves £8100 from which to cover business rates, electricity, insurance, staff wages, marketing, cost of fit out
Hardly the killing one one poster suggested.

In the 90's there was a secure bike storage place in the West End of London. I had new Diamondback at the time and even then I wouldn't leave a bike like that chained up in the open.Secure bike parking is a growing issue, it's practically impossible to stop a determined thief from nicking a bike from the street if they want to, however it is locked up.

No on-site parking helps too
40 bikes is way too small for that to be viable. Looking at the photos they could easily double that just with some decent racks in the current bit, and there's probably space to put the same about of racks the other side.
This kind of thing is really common around here, with shop units like this taking probably 100+ bikes, but are council funded.

a pound a day seems ridiculously cheap. But that's the cycling community I think.
Can you park a car for a pound a day in Newport? And how much does it cost to go by public transport?
A fiver a day would be better, but of course, cyclists and sanctimonious tight wads spring to mind.

even if you double it to £2 a day then its still cheaper than a coffee.
