Looking for a tow ball rack to take 2x 27kg Ebikes for a Tesla model Y

Any suggestions out there. Looking for ease of use, looks as if we need to budget around £500. Ouch!

Cheers

I have an Atera Genio Pro. The bikes have more space between them than other racks.

I just use a regular 3 bike rack (£50) from halfords and use a top tube adaptor (£20 each) for each bike. The adaptors mean the bikes essentially hang underneath. They're brilliant. It makes it much easier to get the bike on/off the rack and you don't risk damaging your frame paint squeezing the rack arms through the center of your bike frame.

I don't have a photo of mine but I fit 2x Haibike AllMtn Ebikes on it which both weigh circa 25kg. I take the batteries out of both bikes (around 3.5kg each) and the front wheels off too (around 2kg each?) so the overall load on the rack is around 40kg. The rack limit is 45kg so close but within the limit.

When on and tied down properly it feels solid as a rock and to be honest, I wouldn't risk £9k's worth of bikes on £90 worth of rack if I wasn't confident in the set up.

Some pictures taken from online to give you an idea.

I tried the 'hanging' type of the Bike carrier, and found it a ball ache - especially with the weight.

I moved to a 'sit on top' or wheel mounting carrier - got a Thule VeloCompact 3B from Halford for £394 in a deal.

Can't fault it.

agreed with the above. I have the MAxxRaxx 5 bike carrier but even when i sneak out on my own using the top tube adaptor its a ball ache. and teh sheer weight of the eBike(minus battery) causes me concern when on fast or bumpy roads.

27.5 kg each? That seems very very heavy.

I would have thought that most standard towball carriers would take your ebikes if you remove the batteries.

Mrs DS and I have Canyons and they're 20.3kg each without batteries. We use a Thule Velocompact 2 which has a capacity of 46kg and we've been all over the place with them on this rack, no problems, and the Velocompact is a pretty lightweight rack.

There are dedicated ebike racks which will take even more - just be aware of your towballs maximum vertical loading.

Do you already have the towbar fitted? If not, be aware you have to get Tesla to fit it

Car is coming with the tow ball option, arriving any day now. Nose weight is 75kg, bikes are full suspension hence the weight.

Have you taken a look here...

They don't look much more than a standard rack tbh. 30kg per bike limit, so they'll be fine even with your 27kg bikes,.

I have just bought a used Thule velocompact 927 for carrying my ebike but one thing I quickly encountered was due to the wheelbase of my bike ( large mondraker level R 2022) was that the ratchet straps for the wheels needed unbolted and slid out as far as possible which isn’t a bad thing but you loose one of the supports by doing this, going to fabricate a support bracket to remedy this but wheelbase is something to consider.

Roof mounting isn’t an option due to the bike weighing 26kgs and a non removable battery

Am I misunderstanding the pictures or are the bikes effectively hanging from the saddle/seatpost atone end and the stem at the other? Probably over thinking it but that’d worry me.
