I was wondering what people's thoughts are on bike insurance.

I've always just had my home contents insurance covering my bikes but wonder if a dedicated policy offers benefits over a general one like that?

Home contents covers theft, damage and some degree of third party/personal liability so I'm not sure what more cover I'd need.

I've had bike specific insurance for a few years now and I think it's worth it. I suppose it depends on the value of your bike(s) and the Ts and Cs of your home insurance.

I made a claim in the spring (bike on friend's van vs. height restriction barrier) that wouldn't have been covered by my home insurance. A friend claimed for a new carbon frame following a crash; again I doubt that would have been covered by home insurance.

I've also flown abroad with my bike and the insurance covers it in transit and for the usual stuff while in Europe (worldwide cover also an option). You can also get add-ons if you race etc.

My house insurance covers my cheaper bikes, winter roadie and old MTB. For my triathlon bike I have dedicated cover. Mostly because house insurance wont cover bikes that valuable, but there are other benefits as well, although mostly for triathlon.

First off you get public liability insurance which can be useful if you're not a BC member etc and have it all ready. It also covers things like wheels, computers, helmets etc

When I couldn't do Ironman Lanza because of illness I claimed my entry fee back, although that was with the top level cover which wasnt cheap

Standalone bike insurance can be quite expensive.

As an alternative, I used to use a company called Pedalcover who bill themselves as home insurance aimed at keen cyclists. Their policies offer a lot of bike cover inclusively, and they were always good to deal with and competitive on price. In fact I only stopped using them because they changed their underwriter and couldn't cover my house any more due to the non-standard construction method.

No insurance here, I spend the cost of the insurance premium on locks. Everything at home is locked up in the garage, multiple d-locks, cables etc. all locked to each other, work benches etc. out on a ride, nothing is left out of sight when I’m out and if i have a bike on the roof rack, it’s rare it’s left unattended but if it is, motorway services for example, it’s locked to the rack which is locked to the roof bars. Not infallible but enough of a deterrent for ten minutes.

I’m with Yellow Jersey through cycling U.K. Me, plus 2 bikes (£2350 & £995) costs me £150 a year.

Needed an approved ground anchor & chain for the garage but has that anywhere.

I've just added a new bike to my Laka policy, it's now gone up to an estimated £90/mth with a max of £120/mth

A little eye-watering, although covers three bikes with combine value of approaching £20,000.

My issue is that they are all very well covered from theft, anywhere, through my household policy - I just need the cover for potential damage during riding, and therefore only one bike can be ridden at a time, however it seems there are no real option for just 'on bike' cover.

Exactly the same here. Great company with actual cyclists on the other end of the phone. Cost for bikes and house/contents was competitive against even the best prices from standard policies. As above, had to go elsewhere when they stopped being able to cover my house - subsidence in the area by all accounts
