Wondering if anyone could help and advise if my bike is set up correctly or not. The bike has a 2x9 gear system, and the 2 gear shifts are set up opposite ways round. To go up a cog on the front you push the lever under the handlebar, but to go up a gear at the rear you pull the lever on top of the bars, if that makes sense? (or visa versa, maybe) It feels a bit to me as if someone has set it up wrongly, as it would make far more sense for both gear shifters to work in the same way. I'm constantly forgetting they are different and either going up a gear when I mean to go down, or down when I mean to go up.

From looking, the bike has Shimano Alivio M4000 Rapidfire Plus 2x9 speed gear shifters on, if that helps.

To go up a gear at the back you move to a smaller sprocket, releasing tension on the rear cable, to go up a gear at the front you move to a larger chainring pulling on the cable so they are opposite.

Sounds like it has a low normal / rapid rise rear mech? You can’t set them up wrong so it works however it works. Would need a new rear mech to make it go the other way.

Ah ok, that makes sense, thank you. Not very convenient, but makes sense!
