I just got a message from my daughter saying her OH is in hospital.

He cycles to work every day and got stung in the mouth this morning.

Fortunately he was near his work and when he started having breathing difficulties the works nurse sent him to hospital.

From what my daughter said it was the position of the sting rather than an allergic reaction that was the problem which I suppose in the long run is a good thing. They’re waiting about 6 hours till the swelling goes down before they release him.

Not a common thing I’d think but probably not as rare as you’d believe.

Ouch, I hope he recovers quickly!

I've been stung on the stomach and forehead this year whilst riding (separate rides) and have had one on my lip in the past - so I'd agree that it's probably not that rare that folk get stung in their mouths!

Not really much that can be done about it, unless we start wearing full face helmets!

Recently, a bee landed on the inside of my goggles either when I had them round my neck on the lift, or just as I was pulling them on, at the top of a fast double black diamond jump line.
Didn't move or make itself known at all until I was in the air on the first jump hehe

I also swallowed a fly, jumped a copperhead snake, AND saw a black bear with cubs at the side of the trail that same day. I'd take a bee sting in the mouth over being attacked by a protective black bear any day.

I got stung on the tongue whilst out on the bike in The Lakes last year! My mate had to pull the barb out but fortunately my tongue didn't swell up too much. It was quite worrying at the time and the swelling only lasted a few hours.

I got stung inside the nostril while touring in France, inside the freaking nostril. I left my two mates who don't speak French try to explain that to the pharmacist...

MTB ride last week me and my riding buddy got stung by hornets.
At the next stop we found that around 40% were stung. A disturbed nest was getting its revenge.
Few weeks ago some riders down south (France) were hospitalised after 40+ stings.

Hornets definitely worse than wasps

I got stung on the lip once as I spat a wasp out. It swelled up quite a lot (to my friend's amusement) and I'm not particularly sensitive to stings.

I'd say if you ever get stung at the back of the mouth, get help while you can still breathe ok...

I've had a wasp sting or two when gone down my jersey, but first bee sting when riding this year after one got itself entangled in my helmet straps/glasses. Unfortunately this was just as I was going down a steep narrow hill with a car coming the other way, so I was trying to come to a safe stop ASAP with it furiously buzzing and injecting bee jizz into my face. Never have I ripped off my helmet and glasses so fast. It wasn't too bad on the day, but was pretty puffed up 48 hours later.

Stings? Two experiences on my bike with bees. First one was at Eton Dorney, the daft thing got stuck inside my helmet and stung me in my hairline. That was sore. I got lucky the next time, had a Bumble Bee go into my mouth but I managed to blow/spit it out before the damage was done.

Hornets? They're properly aggressive when you upset them. A nest full of them held me up for about 20 minutes once. The nest was in a tree trunk being used by a landowner to prevent access to a field instead of a gate. I stopped for a read of my map and to eat something on a long ride, and leaned my bike against the tree trunk. I wandered behind a hedge for a pee break while I was stopped and when I went to get back onto my bike it was crawling with Hornets and they were swarming around it. I beat a retreat until they calmed down a bit. They'd stopped swarming but there were still some of them crawling around on my frame and saddle. In the end I pulled the bike away at arms length by the handlebars and slowly they all seemed to decide it was no longer a threat and went back to their business. They're quite intimidating in ones and twos, but a whole nest of them swarming in an agitated fashion is something to behold!

Been stung inside my mouth , in the corner of my eye and on my forehead all while cycling.

The eye one was the worst , I looked as though I’d been given a serious hiding and it lasted 3 or 4 days. I think I must have an allergy to the sting venom.

On reflection, the mouth one was pretty dire too, swollen jaw for a few hours

I was recently stung by a wasp that had decided the glove by the stove was a good place to hide.

I put the glove on to open the stove door when it got me. I didn't know what it was but jumped back in shock and suggested a spider had bit me at which point my wife and grown up daughter promptly ran out of the room leaving me to deal with it.

So much for their sympathy!

Been stung by a wasp on the inside of my mouth while cycling, spat the wasp out again quickly;) Also just beneath the eye on another occasion. Face swelled up like a balloon in both cases, but calmed down in ca 12hrs or so.

Not much you can do, if it happens it happens.

Stung by a bee or wasp earlier this year while descending around 25mph, it was just by my temple. I tried to remove my helmet, glasses and cap all while stopping, not a great tactic but thankfully it was a quiet lane.

It didn't swell instantly but woke up the next day with one eye closed and that continued for a few days. Previous bee / wasp stings haven't had the same reaction. It hurt a lot more than previous stings too, had pain radiating around my eye socket within a couple of mins which got worse the faster I went.

Unconnected, but we had huge fun pranking a guy we were riding with by saying we'd seen a wasp fly into his open jersey neck. He leapt off his bike and stripped down like a man on fire.

A wasp somehow got inside my glasses and stung me twice before I managed to remove them, when I say remove them, I mean leap off my bike whilst still in motion whilst simultaneously yanking my glasses off. Lucky there were no cars around.

Ended up with a nasty eye infection due to the soft tissue swelling up so much I couldn't blink for a few days.
