Recently got into mountain biking, however wanting a more practical car for mountain bike transport to trails, hoping for some inspiration - ideally IN not ON the car smile

Probably not the most practical but it works

Edit: my car is zero tow rated so it has to be on the roof, tried it in the car and not a good idea when the bikes covered in mud.

A4 Allroad, 2 bikes in the back no probs front wheels off, on the side

Once had a Skoda Superb estate - 3 bikes in the back vertical, front wheels off.

I picked up a diesel Ford Fusion for a couple of hundred and could easily get two MTBs and camping gear in with rear seats down. Great loading space as there’s no lip on the boot. Not the most glamorous or fast of Fords but cheap and cheerful and did the job as well as being an absolute bargain to run.

I had a mk4.5 Mondeo hatchback. I had a spesh sirrus XL with mudguards. Rear seats down on the mondeo and it dropped right in. No wheels off or wiggling it around to fit. It was a superb car for that.

The size of the bike and mudguards can make a big difference to getting it inside a car, but pretty much every car will take a bike inside without too much hassle.

First Civic I ever bought, a mk 4, I bought specifically because I could get a bicycle in the back.

Focus estate (mk3) - my road bike fits in without having to take the wheels off.

What car do you have just now? It'll be cheaper to keep it and transport your bike on the outside if it doesn't fit inside, a no brainer really. Who wants muddy wheels inside their car?

Some great replies here, loving the inspiration in the linked thread.

I think an estate is the chosen route - now to not get carried away

e46 M3 - bike in the back, wheels in the boot. if you're getting wet/muddy then seat covers are available but I just use old towels or sheets.

F31 and if more than one bike on a Thule tow bar rack.
Modern bikes don’t fit in my 205 as easily as they once did.

Carrying things away is the point.

128ti. With both seats down, my Road bike goes in without having to remove any wheels. I am about to buy a roof carrier though for my cyclocross bike as last year I had to clean the bike after each race and then the car interior!

When I used to work away during the week, I took my 29er with me to commute to and from the hotel/office. With quick release wheels, it fitted behind the front seats in a Fiesta Mk6, just use an old sheet to protect the interior and away you go.

I remember at the Skoda Citigo launch they showed how a bike goes in one of them. A bike will go in anything, just depends how convenient you want it to be. When I was at VW, I worked with a guy who went mountain biking with his Golf Cab.

On a more practical note, tow bar and rack on current car?

There is a lot to be said about having the bike inside from a security perspective though.

Noobed 9-3 Aero. The bike fits inside nicely albiet with the rear seats down, I only bought the roof rack to avoid getting mud in the car.
