Getting old, fat and less fit everyday, so I’ve spent a bit of time tarting up my old mtb recently (battered 15yr old 26” hardtail) and finally, having booked a day off yesterday took it out on a very easy trail.

Think I’ve forgotten how to ride as I was all over the place and even on the slightest incline I was breathing out my arse but enjoyed myself immensely.

Aching like a bd this morning and the bike needs some new tyres, front brake needs bleeding again and a few bits need tightening up (like the seat rail bolt which neatly resulted in a whole new hobby when the seat fell off eek

Once I’ve done those few bits and I can lift my own arms, I should be set to go again smile

Well done.

I have a 5yo Daddy's girl, which has put the kybosh on any activities for about 5 years... She is becoming massively more independent, and hoping in the next year or so that a few windows will appear!

Well done man. Don’t be put off by how hard/painful it is…. but be patient with yourself too.

I took my >10yr old Boardman MTB with sketchy indexed gears, old knobbly MTB tyres , no useful rear brake and a ripped seat out last month and completed the Garmin 400km in one month challenge; 20km per day, with the odd long weekend holiday added to the mix.

Felt quite chuffed with myself..

...to then find that Garmin have learnt I am back on the bike and set the same challenge again for September....

It doesnt get any easier, you just go faster. Even Nino Schurter is blowing out of his arse at the top of climbs when hes riding properly.

Welcome back.

Hide your credit card.

Keep at it, can be really disheartening and easy to give up after your first ride in a while where you're blowing out your arse and feel like you're lungs are about to explode but you'll get there.

Apologies, I didnt mean to lessen your achievement - and to paraphrase a replier a little further up, I'm still blowing out of my arse, even on the flats. Oh, and heed the advise of 'hide the credit card'.....

Ha, no worries!! smile

Luckily enough, my company has just released another cycle2work scheme so I’ve gone for £500 to spend on bits and bobs (new brakes, new lid, gloves, tyres etc)

Shame I can’t get some roof bars with it though, ones for my company Q2 are £££

Yep!!! However I have a road bike, the hardtail and a project bike already (that hasn’t been touched for many years) so I wouldn’t get away with another bike

To be honest, I quite like the old hardtail with its tiny wheels smile

Inevitable biggrin

If you get the opportunity have a go on a 27.5 wheeled bike, genuinely better in every way over a 26…then you have an excuse to buy a new bike, as it’s a replacement wink
