Any recommendations for trainers that I can use with my SPDs? I use Bontrager mountain bike shoes at the moment, but would still prefer something more "trainer like". I like to be able to walk and maybe run in a normal manner. Does something like this exist?

Basically no - you can get MTB shoes with cleats but you said you wanted more "trainer" than that.

There are these

But you said you wanted to run - running requires flex, cycling efficiency requires stiffness so the two aren't really compatible.

Swap to flat pedals.

I have some Northwave shoes with Vibram soles and SPD cleats, they are fine for walking in, but I wouldn't want to run that far in them.

I’ve a pair of SPD trainers from DZR. They’re distinctly “meh” for cycling (and by that I mean short, across town commutes and pub rides), at best a bit crap for walking any appreciable distance, and as for running, I’ve not tried and would never want to.

The needs of even a basic SPD cycling shoe are utterly incompatible with those of a basic walking shoe/trainer. Stiff where you want supple, thick where you want thin, thin and thin where you want thick, and the cleat scrapes loudly, _everywhere_ to the point where it’s just embarrassing.

Everyone else I know who has tried the same style (inc. the much celebrated Adidas ones last year) has thought the same.

Thanks for the recommendations. I will check them out.

I wasn't planning to run any marathons in them. Perhaps just the ability to chase after someone if they steal my bike smile

Wouldn't work because you need a really stiff sole for clipless pedals to work (there being no platform on the pedal). So they would be terrible to run in.

Adidas do Velosamber which are cycling shoes that look like trainers. Not sure about running in them though.

Adidas Velosamba

They aren't very nice to walk in and I certainly wouldn't even consider running in them

Great casual cycling shoes though, allows me to ride my CX bike with a kid on the back and walk around with the family without looking like a complete plank.

After to trying to catch after my three year old in them I can confirm that the Velosamba are indeed rubbish for running in. At least I didn’t fall flat on my face as I would have done in traditional cycling shoes.

I would say that they are comfortable enough to wear all day, provided you don’t walk miles, plus as the previous poster stated they look just like normal trainers.
