Kids cycling Sutton Park Birmingham
Discussion
Hi,
There are no dedicated cycle paths in Sutton Park, all paths are shared.
The main paths are fine for road bikes, a lot of the paths have had the potholes fixed now, probably extra money from the Commonwealth Games.
Sutton Park can get very busy, with shared paths means been careful, many dog walkers.

Our 5yo grandson is a demon on his little bike. It occurs to me that when he gets his next bike, he'll be much faster. What are the cycle paths through Sutton park like, are they road bike friendly? I've seen that they only want you to use the paths marked as bridleways.
Don't get him a road bike. The majority of kids want to ride everywhere. A road bike is not the answer.Isla bike is what you need... Flat bars... Knobbly but fast rolling tyres... Saddle, brakes, and grips sized to suit. They'll go Anway where.
Most importantly, they're very very light. Worst thing for kids is a heavy bike.
Thank you all for the comments, most helpful.
The family live quite near Sutton Park, but Cannock Chase looks better but more of an expedition with youngsters.
If I have anything to do with his next bike, it will be a kids bike not a road racer, he'll be able to ride it anywhere.
He's coming up to 5 and this is his current bike
However he watches Fabio Wibmer videos a lot, so for the past year he's been making home made jumps and riding down flights of steps and generally doing mad things.
He ditched the stabilisers some time ago, and being a high quality product it has got lighter over the last couple of years as bits have fallen off.
I'm sure that an Isla Bike would be wonderful, but it's waay out of our budget.

Also look at Frog, and a lot of the big mtb brands now do good kids bikes.
Re cost... You do get a huge chunk of what you pay back, whereas the example above will be skip fodder once he's finished with it.
But I take your point - it's strong money to lay out regardless of how much you get back.
As he's getting into jumping, gloves and knee pads are essential... I have some kids leatt mtb gloves and fox launch pad knee pads (from when my son was 6). PM me your address and I'll send them for the wee fella. The pads are perfect, but one of the gloves has a hole at the tip of the index finger.

Islabikes TCO is not a lot though. I think on every islabikes I’ve had for my boys, I’ve sold it for about £100 less than I paid SGN I bought them new. Buy used and you’ll get even more of that back, my brother has just sold two islabikes (benin 24s) which he bought used for the same as he paid for them. Knock at the door, package arrived.Thank you so much, I'm certain our grandson Miles will be really happy with this stuff. I'll get them to take some pics when he's kitted up.
