I have a Trek Dual Sport 2 hybrid for daily use, it's lasted me well but the bottom bracket feels like something has gone inside (bearings or similar). It seems to have some kind of no-brand forged front crank and bits ( https://www.trekbikes.com/gb/en_GB/bikes/hybrid-bi... ). Will this frame allow me to swap this out for something a bit more hardwearing? What would you recommend at a sensible price with similar ratios?

You just need to swap the Bottom Bracket, not the chainset and cranks.

Theres not enough info/dimensions on that site to determine the exact type size but its more than likely a square taper, possibly an Octolink. Check before you buy.

You need to know BB axle length and BB shell width. Absolute doddle for any bike shop, if you DIY you'll need a crank extractor and a BB spanner/socket to suit.

A decent Shimano UN style BB is still only about twenty quid:

Trek's website suggests that it uses a 68x122.5mm Square Taper BB.

They'll sell you the one they fit for £10.99 (https://www.trekbikes.com/gb/en_GB/equipment/cycling-components/bike-bottom-brackets/-vp-components-square-taper-bottom-bracket/p/1040693/), though if it hasn't lasted very long, get a Shimano one as recommended above.

You'll need a appropriate tools to pull off the crank arms and unscrew the BB, which will be *tight*.

Before you go to the trouble, check that it's not actually your pedal bearings that have become gritty. Sealed square taper BBs should last for yonks.

Good advice. I thought the b/b was gone on my bike but turned out to be the cheap pedals.
Feel for play in the pedals and the b/b, but the play can be miniscule.

Thanks for the info and tips.

It's definitely not the pedals, I replaced them very soon after getting the bike for Meetlocks. The bike has had a lot of use in a hot humid wet climate while I was in Singapore (lots of smooth, level, cycle paths there) so I'm not surprised something has worn out or lost it's lubrication.
