I'm off to Morzine on Thursday, taking my MTB on the plane. Easyjet say I can't pack any clothes in my bike bag, do they enforce this or can I stuff it full of my gear?

This is my first time taking my bike on the plane - any tips from more experienced flyers? I've got some spacers for my brakes and have borrowed a bike bag from a friend, and that's about it - tips welcome.

I flew to Mallorca with easyJet in March, packed everything for the trip in the bike box with the bike - clothes, shoes, tools etc. Took my helmet in small cabin bag. As long as you stay within the weight limit (~32kg I think) you should be ok? Admittedly harder with an MTB vs road bike!

They're not clothes, they're expensive rags to pad everything out.
Easyjet won't be going near your bag to check.
You'll hand it over at the oversized baggage. The airport staff there will x-ray it, pass it down the chute to the baggage handlers to load on the plane. None of them will be employed by Easyjet.

I've got a very large bike bag in which I take a few spares for my road bike. The spares just happen to bolt together and form my wife's road bike. 2 for the price of 1. smile Never been a problem.

Stay under the weight limit and don't pack co2 cartridges and no-one will care.

They say the same thing about ski / snowboard bags - but I don't know anyone who has ever stuck to the rule & never heard of a problem.

Flew to Morzine with BA some 4 years ago to do the PDS and took a bike bag. Take lots of clothes to pad out the vital parts of the bike. Lower the pressure on the tyres a little. Out of the six of us, I was the only person with minimal damage, slightly bent disc, otherwise pretty good. You will love it out there, if you haven't been before..

Cheers. Have skied there for the last 8 years, this is my first visit in the summer, really excited to get out there.

For those mountain bikers here - did you take air out of your front and rear suspension?

I put everything in my bike box. Helmet, shoes, Huel bags, body armour, etc etc. Not once been an issue on any airline so far.

I left my suspension as is. I have skied there lots of times, just looks so different in the summer without the snow. Nice to get a few down at Robinsons Bar and cycle back to the hotel smile

Traveled around 6 times on a plane with my bike, never let air out of tyres but do run low pressure anyway. Do let air out of fork and shock but that’s because I have a very long bike that doesn’t fit the bag easily. Can take up to two co2 in the bag. Alway take rotors off so they don’t get damaged. Helmet comes with me as hand luggage so it doesn’t get damaged.

Get ready for the heat! Hopefully just that and any rain will come when you are sat on a balcony drinking beer in the evening ready for the lightning display.

I always used my clothes (and shoes) to pad out the frame.

The only issue is if your bike is late arriving you will be light on clothing and protective kit when hiring a bike.
