I bought a kids Isla 16 bike second hand off ebay turns up and rear wheel seems to buckled. I looked online and it suggests unbuckling can be done at home using spoke key, watched a few vids looks relatively easy or I'm I opening myself up to a world of pain?

Thanks

I once tried to unbuckle a 26inch bike wheel. I didn’t manage to get it straight, in fact I think I may have made it worse.
Local bike shop sorted it out.

Depending how buckled it is......

You can do a bit by easing and tightening spokes.
But if it's far out, you may not succeed.

I bought an old mountain bike few years back, the rear wheel was about an inch to one side at one point.
I got it reasonably true by dismantling the wheel completely, molesting the rim until it was fairly circular and all in one plane, then rebuilding the wheel.
ISTR I used the old spokes but some new nipples.

Still using the wheel.

How far is it out of true? Any more than 5mm and I would take it to a bike shop.2 to 3mm and I would give it a go at home. It's not rocket science and it's a kids bike after all.

1) get the tyre and tube off
2) use the brake blocks as truing guides
3) be careful the ensure the spoke key is the correct size: if you round off the nipples you’ll be in a world of pain.
4) take your time, find a quiet spot as you’ll need to hear the ‘scuff’ as the high point of the rim touches the brake block
