Having recently started riding again I'm looking into a purchase of a road bike. I'm currently riding a Carrera Subway 1 which I find perfectly acceptable, but I'd like something more road focussed.

Very narrow budget and I'm tossing up between the Triban RC120 and Pinnacle Laterite 1. Is there any reason to choose one over the other?

Thanks in advance

I have the old Triban 500se which has been a solid bike for the 20k ish miles I've ridden on it. The wheels were a bit of a weak point and didn't last all that long and the saddle was horrendous.

I'd probably go for the Triban for the extra gear, plus I don't know anything about the other bike.

There is genuinely no reason to choose one over the other, the 34t cassette on the Tribam coupled with the 34t chainring will make climbing vey easy which might sway it. They are very similar in terms of spec and quality. I like Pinnacle, from personal experience they are good solid bikes and well finished.

The 7 speed tourney mech would put me off the Pinnacle.
I'm no expert, but 8 speed is more versatile in terms of upgrades and compatibility I think?

a cheap rear mech which can't be upgraded would be annoying to me, so I'd research that a bit?

8 speed is cheap to run, parts a fraction of the cost of 10 speed.
But 10 speed is not dear these days.

I've got both Btwin and Pinnacle bikes and both have been faultless, if you can overlook the brand snobbery.

The COVID cycling bubble seems to be waining, used bikes are coming down in price, but new bikes are still limited.

A used Triban 3 and a proper service may save you a big chunk of money, which can be used towards something better later on.

The pinnacle is on 25mm tyres which means higher pressures unless you are going to change them straight away.

As long as it is low enough to get you up the hills you get used to the gearing, I have a 3*8 (Claris) and a 2*11 (105) and the 105 annoys me at times as I have to move several gears to get the same effect as moving one gear on the other. The main factor is the range and what the terrain is like where you will ride - the top end is the same on both of mine 50-11 but the lowest gear on the claris is way lower than that on the 105.
