I have a 10ish year old Orange Gyro (a bit like a Five) which I’ve owned for a year or so.

I’ve no idea if the rear shock has ever had much attention, though it was working fine when I last rode the bike about 3 months ago. Went for a ride today and the shock had lost air pressure, so I topped it up, for it to gradually drop again. Shock sounded a little gritty initially too.

So, presumably seals and an air can clean... But the compression adjust appears to have stopped working too? It seems like it’s in descend/soft mode the whole time, even when just re-pressurised. And even when at high pressure it seems to have too much sag. Rebound adjust seems to work fine still.

I’ve stored the bike on-end, which I didn’t think would cause any issue - just a coincidence? (Brakes and fork seem fine)

I don’t know therefore whether to take it apart myself and replace the air can seals etc. or am I likely to be wasting my time and should just send it off somewhere for a full strip? It’s a Fox Float CTD “boost valve factory series”.

Any recommendations for places to send it if so? I’ll call my (excellent) local bike shop tomorrow to see if they can do it but I suspect not.

Many thanks.

I havent used them but these guys were recommended to me to supply an updated spring for my rear shock.

I think they are well regarded and you can courier the shock to them. Its seems a slick business.

Silverfish are the UK distributors for Fox. They serviced mine. It was actually a warranty job so I don't know what their costs are like but they did a good job and the shock has been great since.

The reviews are a bit hit and miss. Mine took a while to fix but that was due to COVID, spares availability and high customer demand at the time.

My shock had zero damping from new. The air spring was fine, but it sounded like it had air in the damping circuit cos it sounded squelchy / gritty. Taking the air can off and cleaning it all up won't fix this. You will need to get in to the damping / IFP circuit.

Thanks guys,

My local bike shop guys said they wouldn’t do it themselves but would send it off to Plush or TF Tune, or Silverfish but they generally use the first two. Pricing seems to be much the same (£115-£119 including all expected parts).

I’ve booked a slot with Plush for a few days’ time and will get it in the post to them. Apparently should be a 2-3 day turnaround. Both the Plush and TF websites and booking processes seem slick and informative also.

They can re-tune it for you as well if you go and see them, but for now the standard bike is certainly more competent than I am so default settings will do me fine!
