Theoretical at this stage...

Say you had £10k to spend on a bike, the money can't be used for anything else, so Investment, Coke & Hooker fans look elsewhere..

Needs to be custom made, ideally Italian

For me

  • Sarto frame, custom colour scheme and geo
  • Dura-Ace Di2 (I know, i know)
  • Enve wheels / or similar
  • Smattering of high-end, but usuable parts
Go..

Considering you can drop £10k on a S-Works / Madone etc, I think it's a good option..

I've predominantly ridden MTB's for the last 30 years and have spent more than I care to imagine on these over the years. I have tried road bikes and they just aren't for me. Then I went to ride the French Alps for a week and decided an MTB probably wasn't the best bet for climbing D'Huez, Galibier, Croix de Fer etc so I thought GRAVEL BIKE" as the best of both worlds. More fun than a road bike and disc brakes for the downhills.

I think if I was going for a forever bike it would have to be a gravel / adventure type bike. I don't think I could pick a forever MTB?

So.....

Frame: Prova Mostro Ti
Forks: ENVE Carbon
Drivetrain: SRAM AXS with Cane Creek eeWings cranks
Brakes: SRAM with Hope calliper upgrade
Wheels: Chris King Hubs with carbon rims and 47mm tyres - 650b
Bars: Carbon flared 46cm
Seatpost: Bike Yoke dropper
Saddle: Flite Ti

No idea how much that will all be but it's got to be around 10 grand I reckon?

I've never had a bike worth much money but I'd probably get the legendary Santa Cruz 5010 (2017 model) and throw money at everything other than brakes and drivetrain.

Saint 4 pot and single speed for me smile

Nice, very nice. I've got Chris King hubs on my winter bike (long story!) and they are mint. 7 years old, 5 winters and still run sweet with no servicing.

At first thought it would probably be a Mason Aspect:

https://masoncycles.cc/shop/categories/aspect-bike...

AFAIK, frames are built-to-order in Italy so fit the bill.

If I'm allowed to spend any surplus I'd go with Ultegra Di2 and the spare cash on European riding trips / holidays. If it's all on the bike, then Dura Ace Di2 (though having had to replace a borked Ultegra Di2 front mech last year, I hate to think how much a DA would be).

Wheels - something carbon but stealthy from David at DCR Wheels. DT Swiss 240 hubs - having serviced a DT 350 freehub recently, I was very impressed it can be done with no tools (bar removing the cassette though you could leave that on).

Nope, £10k all on the bike! That Mason is nice, not seen one before.

Think I'd probably go for a demon frameworks frame and spend whatever I had left on the best kit I could fit into the budget.

Custom steel frame for maybe £3k. I'm not actually sure how much they cost.

Campagnolo Super Record 11 speed mechanical rim brake. 50/34 12*29.

Hed Belgium Plus rims. DT 240 hubs. Plenty of spokes. Veloflex tyres.

Supacaz bar tape and other bits of bling finishing kit.

Some nice options. I appear to be getting deeper into a Sarto obsession.

This could get expensive.

I wouldn't. You can get very decent kit for much less than that and I'd rather leave some of the budget to upgrade down the line. I don't know how long your forever is, but in 20 years' time, even DA di2 is going to be looking and feeling old. would you be happy now if you had the latest tech from 10/20 years ago on your best bike?

i’m lucky in terms of i bought my BMC teammachine a year before the pandemic and before parts shortages and mega price increases. I paid £8000 for it with Campagnolos autumn/winter discount which is obviously now not a thing.

To all intents and purposes it’s identical to this:

https://www.bmc-switzerland.com/intl_en/22-teammac...

Apart from a few tweaks to the frame there’s nothing between the bikes except it’s now £13169. it’s a lovely thing to pedal, not ridden anything better although C64 gives it a good run for the money.

I doubt these custom mega cash frames are any better than anything being churned out by the big brands. Most
people don’t have weird shaped bodies either requiring totally custom.

As said above, I had a top end bike 10 years go - totally out of date now, and probably not long before buying replacement bits is tricky even.

Better to spend £5k so you can replace it when nicked.

Or £3.5k for when it gets nicked twice unfortunately.

I went down this road several years ago and was determined to get something "exclusive/special" that I would keep for life. I had quotes for numerous builds that included Sarto, Parlee, Colnago, Enigma to name a few. My geometry requirements lend themselves to a custom build as I have a long in seam and short torso so standard geo bikes generally dont work well for me.

One day I had a test ride on an "ordinary" bike from the LBS and 5 years later I still have that bike. It's changed a bit, but it's perfect. I don't ride it as often as I used to because at the same time I bought an S-Works diverge and that's another bike that I don't think I'll ever replace because the fit is perfect. So I now have two bikes for life, albeit for a higher price than the custom ones, but not by a huge margin.

What point am I trying to make. Quite often, the bike that you covet the most doesn't end up being the one you get the most enjoyment out of. Obligitary pics.

i’ve got an Infiniti CV as well which shares best bike duties with the BMC, although an ‘endurance bike’ the geo between the two is virtually the same. It’s definitely a race bike no mistake
