I fitted the new Maxxis Velocita 700x40 tyres I had for Xmas to my gravel bike on the weekend.

Fitted new Muc-off tubeless valves & fresh Stans race sealant.

Was very impressed with them on the first ride up to mile 34. Quick & quiet with a lovely ride. Then sealant spraying everywhere.

Stopped & re-inflated but tyre wouldn’t hold pressure so pushed the bike home.

Took the tyre off today. Hole was microscopic so shocked the sealant didn’t work.

Patched the tyre so it’s good to go tomorrow but pretty worried now.

Never had sealant fail before. So much for EXO puncture protection too.

Being a mountain biker and running tubeless for a decade, I can never understand why some holes seal and others don’t. It’s not related to the size of puncture that’s for sure. Carry some Pooh-sticks and that will get you home 99% of the time. Failing that carry a tube.

Thanks. Funnily enough, I ordered a Stans dart system earlier.

I’ve been tubeless on this bike for 2300 miles but on the Giant tyres. Never had an issue. Hopefully just unlucky yesterday.

I think the problem is that you stopped riding. I bet if you'd carried on the tyre would have sealed. You could have then stopped and added a few PSI.

I had the same thing the other day. Thorn through the tyre. I stopped and spun the wheel until the hole was at the bottom thinking this would be good to seal the tyre but it just pee'd sealant all over the place. I turned the bike upside down and spun the wheel and it sealed. I added a few PSI and carried on riding at it was fine and has been ever since.

This is my fear as a road bike user and the reason i still prefer tubes.

Ignorant Q - does the lower temps hinder the slime?

Not trying to teach granny to suck eggs but did you give the bottle of sealant a good shake before you used it? Obviously if you used the small bottles where the whole contents go in the tyre then this doesn't matter as much.

Thanks for the additional replies.

I rode on it for about 500 yards before the tyre completely deflated. Sealant peed out everywhere.

Stopped, inverted the bike & pumped it up. Got less than 20 yards before flat again. Pushed it home.

Ref the Stans sealant, I shook the s**t out of it before syringing it in. I reckon the cold must have an impact on performance (it was negative 1.3).

Picking the dart jobbie up tomorrow smile

Another puncture tonight. Sealant sprayed everywhere but did its job.

2000+ miles on the original tyres on the same routes with no issues.

150 on these “puncture resistant” tyres & 2 punctures in 7 days.

Quick though.

Really st luck SR. Good effort for the perseverance though.

ETA: Were the original tyres Crosscuts? If so, they have a much lower TPI (60) than your new tyres (120) and I understand the higher a tyre’s TPI, the more prone to punctures it is. The trade off being a higher TPI tyre will be nicer to ride and probably lighter.

Yes, original tyres were Giant Crosscut AT1. 700x38c. Very good. On my spare rim set now.

Another failure today. The most embarrassing one as got to mile 10 & had to phone the wife for rescue.

Tried using a Dart but it failed. Got home, removed the tyres & the plastic point was loose in the tyre.

Thoroughly unimpressed with Stans sealant too. Did nothing ,again, other than make my frame & boots like they’d been jizzed on.

The hole was tiny too.

Old sealant removed, trying Slime but very likely to go down the tube route.

Frustrating,

Sounds like you have a shocking set of new tyres on there. Once they look like a sieve, swap them for something decent.

I had a problem with the Stans race sealant - did everything to the letter on the instructions and it just didn’t work. I contacted customer services to be told ‘the race version should be changed every 2 weeks’. Not ideal really.

Once this bottle is used up, I’ll be going with something else.

I've had issues with Stans sealant (regular not race) seeping slowly through micro-holes in tyres before. On recommendation of local bike shop I switched to Muc-off sealant instead which seems much better (MTB rather than road if it makes a difference).

Here’s a question. Should I return to tubes?

I run Slime tubes on my MTB and they’ve been great. I’ve had punctures but they’ve always saved the day.

It’s tempting!

I use the Muc-Off sealant here. Converted all 4 of my bikes over Xmas (3 MTB and 1 road bike (yet to do the road bike actually!)).

Noticed 4 thorns in one of the tyres the other day and all sealed up nicely once I had removed them.

I'd certainly recommend it from my small amount of experience so far.

Yet to do the road bike yet as the beads always detaches when deflated, so I think its going to be very messy trying to get it to seal once pumping up. Plus the fact that I haven't been out on it this year yet.

Try Orange Seal Endurance. I've been using this for a couple of years now and imho its the best one I have used on my gravel bike.

I can only suggest better tyres (Continental the best imho) and Muc Off tubeless sealant. Has never let me down (excuse the pun)

Got 200 yards on the repaired tyre & it holed in another place.

The tyres must be defective. All the holes have been dead centre.

Turned around, tyres off, original tyres back on with new sealant then a quick 23 mile ride with no issues at all.

Think I’ll mount the Maxxis tyres on my spare rims with tubes & see how they go.
