Hi

I have just started commuting to work on an eMTB.

My approach to maintenance of bikes has been wait until it starts making a noise, then investigate. This approach has worked for me over the years with only a knackered jockey wheel ever leaving me stranded.....

I am doing 26 miles a day on road.

Other than a lube of the chain, what else do you do??

Thanks

Mike

Have spare bearings before they fail, especially bottom brackets.
Oil chain daily, especially if wet, and clean on a weekend.
Full mudguards, with flaps, at all times.

Definitely clean the entire drive train and lubricate it at least once a week. Check regularly for chain wear and replace it as soon as it gets too worn or stretched or you will end up having to replace the chainring and cassette sooner than you might expect.

Decent tyres at the correct pressure.

You’ll get through brake pads, but they’re a doddle to change. YouTube for tutorials.

Rags and WD-40 to clean the chain and floss the cogs of the cassette on a weekly basis. Then relube. Latex gloves and a work stand make this a cleaner and easier job.

Bosch mid drive motor? You’ll need a chain whip and a specific lock ring tool to change the chainring (and a crank arm tool to remove it). Don’t worry, that’s dead easy too.

I would echo the advice to get full mudguards if you’re commuting on it in all weathers.

Best of luck.

Thanks all, just cleaned and lubed my chain and checked tyre pressure for tomorrow. I have previously replaced the pads on my hydraulics on my Boardman hybrid, so not scared at tackling anything on my bikes - I might even try using the hybrid for the commute one time, but I suspect the hills might kill me wink

I am a bit of a fair weather commuter, so have not invested in mudguards yet. I did get caught out last Wednesday though...

The Giants have the Yamaha motor and I have a 'basic' groupset which is fine for the time being. Will upgrade when the inevitable replacement is needed....all part of the fun!!

I have wondered about a more appropriate road tyre for my commute, rather than the 2.4" mud sluggers currently installed. My slight worry is the assistance will stop earlier with a smaller profile depth tyre, but I should generally be able to travel quicker on the flat.

I also max out the speed quite frequently (legs spinning downhill) so a larger chain ring might be called for. At the moment top is 36 - 11.
