Father Christmas has given the go ahead for a new winter jacket for bother gravel and road rides.

It needs to be both warm/wind proof and waterproof (ish) just so I don't get soaked if it begins to rain.

I only ride 3-4 hours max so never that far from home.

Budget is £70-80.

Is a soft shell the best compromise between warmth/water proof?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah I find the soft shell thermal types perfect for this. They tend to have some shower proofing and I don't tend to ride in downpours.

Have both Rapha and DHB . The Rapha pro team softshell is great and my go to, the core no better than cheaper dhb options. Pro team is probably listed above your budget, but often in their archive sale, particularly if you wait till 26th...

Don't know if you're a better gravel rider, but the properly waterproof items tend to get useless with a few patches, and I seem to fall off a lot when attempting !

Thanks Dnlm, I said gravel but it's flattish mountain biking smile, I'm in Lincolnshire so we have no mountains and therefore it's very non technical.

I’ve had good performance from Gore Bike Wear stuff. I use a PacLite shell and layer underneath. I also have a WindStopper shell but that’s not massively water resistant.

Best of luck.

The Galibier Mistral is a great jacket, I've had one for years and it performs really well in everything apart from heavy rain.

Performs way better than the £74 price tag suggests.

Recently bought the decathlon winter jacket for your budget and it's excellent and has a removable liner meaning great for very cold days and slightly warmer ones. Good aero fit lots of pockets and nice and warm.

I don't have a Mistral, but +1 for Galibier anyway, their stuff is reasonably priced and does what it says - they're my first port of call choosing new kit.

Another recommendation from a happy Mistral owner here. It's hard to beat at this price point. You'll need minimum £100+ to get something similar from some of the more high profile brands

Again Galibier Mistral jacket (regulal mistral, not the pro version). Had mine 4 years and still great.
Good down to 0 degrees with just a base layer.

Sizing wise, I’m a 39-40 chest and large fits me well..

The mistral bibtights are equally great BTW

That looks just the ticket. Just got to decide which size to go for really.

I'd also have a look for the Decathlon alternative, but my local store doesn't seem to have it in stock. And a local Indy shop also has some waterproof kit in that I might have a look at too. But I definitely need a new winter jacket that's at least showerproof. My Endura jacket tore when I tried to zip it up around over-stuffed jersey pockets (my fault entirely). And I lost my Sportful Hotpack packable windproof jacket, along with my thermal cap, when it fell out of a jersey pocket on a ride near Cheddar Gorge about a month ago.

Went for this in the end.
Arrived the other day and the XL fits me perfectly (42" chest, small paunch!)
Looks excellent quality for the price.

It's now wrapped ready for Christmas smile
Boxing Day ride is on the cards if weather ok.

Thanks for recommendation.
