Out for my lunchtime bike ride - got to a roundabout, looking right for a clear spot to go... Just as I went to pull away a guy on a rental "Beryl Bike" rode off the pavement to my left into the bike lane and proceeded to ride the wrong way around the roundabout!

Wonder how long it will be until he comes a cropper.

That's almost how I crashed last year.
Went round a corner and there was a woman on the wrong side of the road crossing straight off the pavement in front of me (on her bike).
Cigarette in her mouth and phone in one hand.

She hit the floor hard and I bent her frame in two.

How was the bike?

Out on a group ride a couple of weeks ago. I'd waited to push a slower rider along to catch the waiting group as it's a no-drop set up.
Anyway, approaching the junction where the rest were waiting on a forecourt, another cyclist had taken a short from the road and cut across the forecourt and bunny hopped off the pavement from a blind corner, right in front of me still moving .... I locked up both wheels and he continued. He didn't like being called a , but that's his problem, not mine. biggrin

Some folk using those Beryl Bikes don't have the sense they were born with. And Iford Roundabout is horrid at the best of times. I often enter it from Iford Lane going straight over onto Castle Lane. I won't use the cycle "infrastructure" near the roundabout, I find it far safer to stick to the carriageway. That "Contraflow" cycle route which goes the "wrong way" past the parade of shops... https://www.google.com/maps/@50.7404292,-1.8092413... ...is probably the worst bit as it puts cyclists into conflict with cars. If you want Castle Lane it's often better to go down to Old Iford Bridge and cross at the Toucan crossing onto the Sheep Wash 'Strava Bianca' gravel path. Castle Lane is bad for cycling anyway. There's that huge "hump" of asphalt right in the cycle lane near one of the junctions on the left, and far too many drivers seem to drift into the cycle lane either deliberately or because they've completely switched off. Oh, and that stupid pink Micra that was often parked on the verge partially in the cycle lane too, although not so much since the building work finished at that house.

Bournemouth isn't a very cycle-friendly place really, despite a lot of separate cycle lanes. Perhaps it's because of those cycle lanes? Roads are congested, drivers permanently looking for an excuse to have a bit of a rage at an easy target. But you're right, it seems we're as much at risk from colliding with another bicycle user as we are from car drivers. I've certainly had more near misses than anywhere else I've driven, cycled or walked since I moved here, and Beryl bikes, Beryl scooters, private e-scooters and BSOs feature as often as errant drivers do.

The problem with these rental bikes is obvious; they are often ridden by people who are not cyclists, they do not have their own bikes and they do not ride often enough to be aware. Or they are tourists that they do not know the area, don't give a sh*t and do as they wish. I always see them in the seafront where I live and they go the wrong way on the one-way cycle paths, on the pavement, on the grass, wherever you can imagine.

It's quite crap frankly, good idea for people who do not own bikes, but some level of responsibility is needed.
