JOGLE day 1 route
Discussion
Probably my first of many posts about my planned ride in May.
Day 1 i had originally planned to go north coast and then head south on the A897 covering about 100 miles. However I'm now riding solo and want to alter my overnight stops further south (staying with family etc). For these to work with a daily 100 miles i need to be further south after day 1 and 2.
So the new plan is the A9 down to Invergordon. It's still 100 miles but leaves me about 40 miles further on that the original route and better placed for the rest of the ride.
I've heard to avoid the A9 but wanted to know if people had done it/considered it etc

I did LEJOG in August/September. I used the A9. I liked the A9.Day 1 i had originally planned to go north coast and then head south on the A897 covering about 100 miles. Here's the video of my final day.
May isn't summer holiday season, so hopefully it'll be similar.

I think when folk refer to the A9 they probably mean to avoid it south of Inverness - I wouldn't even consider riding on that section. I did LEJOG a few years ago and we went up the A9 north of Inverness no issues.Day 1 i had originally planned to go north coast and then head south on the A897 covering about 100 miles. Why are you going JOGLE, rather than LEJOG?
Probably loves a headwind hahaAlthough the prevailing wind is indeed SW, in May it tends to be NE. Although knowing my luck it won't be.
Yep, I did the Northern bit of the A9 to finish my LEJOG. It was absolutely fine although if I had one criticism, they could perhaps have made it undercover...
There's a Lidl somewhere along it which may still be out of stock of carbohydrates - I had to buy all of them
It's a great adventure, you'll love it.

No dramas on the A9, other the headwind.
The A303 on the other hand.
Oh yeah, the A303. A bit unusual to see it on a LEJOG, but I had the added fun of it being Bank Holiday Monday! Actually I managed to make it manageable, but it still wasn't ideal. The A303 on the other hand.
The worst bit was getting the holistic A303 experience... got stuck behind a tractor on what would have been a nice descent!

I'd echo all of this, from back in 2012.I did it Northbound, but still. A9 to Inverness, then A82 to Glasgow alongside Loch Ness then Loch Lomond.

Friends live in St Ives so they will meet me at the finish and a couple of days to relax.

I did LEJoG last May….wind very much mostly SWesterly…although the first 3 bd-hilly days were accompanied with 50mph swirling gales and torrential rain (not to mention a snapped crank….countered by zero punctures, and did roll 7 miles downhill to Radstock where a bike shop was next to my hotel that night, meant I could get it sorted!!)Although the prevailing wind is indeed SW, in May it tends to be NE. Although knowing my luck it won't be.
JoGLE makes more sense in some ways…..I approached it in thirds: LE-Leicester, wash stuff at home, Leics-Edinburgh, wash stuff at sons flat, finally on to JoG with pals.
Roughly equal distances (around 380miles each), but in terms of climbs, the first was about 26k feet, the next 22k, the Scottish chapter only 16k: by then my feeble legs were like Popeye & Scotland felt like a relaxing holiday!
Mind you, I only averaged 55miles each day: not a racing cyclist, carrying lots of kit on my hybrid (including tent and sleeping stuff for the middle leg).
Thoroughly enjoyed it, maybe I should try JoGLE in 2022…….
