Exercise bike slipping - help!

Hopefully this is the right place to ask for help.
Our LifeFitness exercise bike has started to slip randomly. It is maybe more of a problem on the higher resistance levels but that’s not always the case. The resistance is controlled by a magnetic clutch assembly. Trawling the internet for advice suggests that it is this assembly that is faulty and the only repair option is to replace the whole unit. It is a very expensive component. Does anyone have any experience of this problem and any advice that doesn’t involve lots of money?
