New Dura Ace (and Ultegra)
Discussion

Finally! Expected Ultegra to be a year later, mildly annoyed as possibly would have waited.
It all sounds good, but nothing blows me away, and think SRAM has really beaten them looks wise - even Rival.
My wife isn’t convinced my current DA groupset is now utterly useless and needs immediate replacement.
There’s a fair bit of negative comments floating around about the group set not being revolutionary.
From what I can see, I think it is a decent upgrade. They’ll be plenty of detail changes and you know it will work well. 12 speed gives options, faster and smoother changes, wireless shifters will tidy things up and brakes supposed to give greater rotor clearance. I think it looks good also.
As much as I’d like to, there is simply no need to rush out and get it though. I know it would be my go to option with SRAM not really getting a look in.

Will the new 12 speed ultegra use the same freehub as 11 speed?
Was planning on getting a new road bike at some point but probably going to have to wait until next year now due to finances and was looking forward to be able to use the same wheels for my CX bike as winter wheels. But if everything starts to change standards that will be a pain.
I wonder how long mechanical 11 speed ultegra will hang around for? Maybe they will use 105 to fill that space in the range.
ETA: need to read more carefully:
"It fits with existing freehub body standards, so happily changing over won't require you to fiddle with or ditch your existing wheels."

Think i read that they have a mildly optimised new freehub, but the 12 speed cassettes are backward compatible...Was planning on getting a new road bike at some point but probably going to have to wait until next year now due to finances and was looking forward to be able to use the same wheels for my CX bike as winter wheels. Wondering how long till there's a fully wired electric 105 would be a buyer of that for winter bike
My first thought was "Blimey. The price is a bit spicy", but then I priced up the drive train and brakes on my MTB.
On the MTB I have XT shifters and mechs with Hope brakes and rotors and a Cane Creek crank set up (which was rather indulgent).
Mech and shifter: £150
Cassette: £120
Chain: £30
Brakes: £400
Rotors: £90
Cranks: £1,000
Chainring: £50
BB: £120
....so close to 2 grand - wish I'd not added it up
So it's pricey....but not ridiculous for the Ultegra set up. Still would be a shock to the bank account though.

A 105 group set is £499 and the next setup seems stupid. Where is the new "mid range" option??
That’s like SRAM was with mtb groupsets until the new GX AXS came out. There used to be 3 low priced groups and then a massive jump to the wireless X01 and XX1 which were nearly the same price. I think it’s a mistake not to have a mechanical Ultegra groupset available. The jump is too great from 105. As a recreational road biker at best, I’m not going to splash out on a super expensive electronic groupset - and if I did, I’d go SRAM anyway as the batteries match my mtb stuff.

So 9200 is defo leccy only. I don't think it's yet public that new Ultegra doesn't offer mechanical...remains to be seen. I'd be surprised if not cuz it means they'll forve people to buy 105?? That doesn't sound sound..
https://www.cyclist.co.uk/reviews/9947/shimano-dura-ace-9200-and-ultegra-r8100-shimano-finally-goes-12-speedThird paragraph says both groupsets are electronic shifting only.

Yeah. Hear that the demand for 'pro level' DA mech was already so low as to make the development time not worthwhile, buyer base for Ultegra is very different. And, imagine, a huge amount larger. So DA9200 rim brake is £3040. Disc brake is £3510 and with PM is £4161. All + £225 of course for a battery and charger.
I suppose it gives a reason for the big bike manufacturers to push their top models up to £15k+ over the £13k ish at present with Red AXS.
Lets be honest here, the 'industry' is just collectively pulling the consumers pants down.

Happy with 105,10 speed, probably selling 105 11 speed equipped carbon, doesn't get used, new gear even 12 speed holds no interest any more, prefer to just ride, any bike that fits
I've got 10 speed 105. Recabled it last year after about 8 fairly hard years use and it's beautifully smooth. I do get upgrade-itis but have managed to resist so far. Hired a BMC with Integra Di2 a couple of years ago and it was better but not by much and I couldn't feel the buttons after a long ride due to carpal tunnel.

No question, it's hilarious really. Unless your bike earns you money via racing they might as well put a card in the box that shouts mug when you open it. I suppose it gives a reason for the big bike manufacturers to push their top models up to £15k+ over the £13k ish at present with Red AXS.

Still it's small change to some people.
The other problem is that anyone even remotely decent enough to need a good bike will begin to think twice about racing them now, not only because it's 15k if some fkwit falls over in front of you, but also because its fking impossible to get a replacement quickly. It never used to be like this.
700 quid for a rear mech is quite hilarious.
