I noticed today that my rear wheel doesn’t have anywhere near as much “free wheel” as the front … if I spin the front … as a comparison - if I spin the front wheel relatively lightly it keeps spinning for about 8sec … I do the same with the rear and it is about 3/4 secs … is this normal ??

I have checked the brakes and no pad rub etc … I am new to bike maintenance so apologies if a dumb question !!!

any thoughts ?

How old is the bike? Is there any noise from the hub with the wheel spinning? If the bearings are worn you might hear a sort of grinding noise or you might hear a click from the hub while you're riding the bike. You can also move the rim from side to side and feel for play round the axle.

It might also just be normal resistance in the freehub. If you don't notice anything when you're riding the bike then I wouldn't worry about it.

Is that spinning the wheel on the bike or taking it off? On the bike you'll have the drag of the chain or the freewheel mechanism and seals. Some hubs may have more bearings as well.

Neither wheel sounds like it is spinning for that long, although I've never timed one before.

The freehub will reduce the amount of time that the wheel spins compared to the front wheel as the ratchet introduces friction the front wheel doesn't have. Take them out of the bike and spin the axles between your fingers to check the bearings, they should be super smooth. If they're new seems highly unlikely anything has gone wrong.
