Have a hard tail atm and have deposit on an Titanium bespoke build which is to be used as a gravel/road bike. Have great hopes on the Ti build but awaiting fit up hopefully in September. And a 6 month build from what I'm hearing due to parts.
So need new shoes which I can use road cycling and gravel without them being too bulky like MTB shows. I've had a look at Fizik Vento Overcurve X3 off road shoe. They look decent enough
Any recommendations?

I like my Shimano XC5 lace-ups, but stock appears thin at the moment, I think they've been superseded with a boa version, but there are plenty of similar shoes out there now.

I use MTB SPD shoes for all cycling - road, gravel, mtb. One pair of shoes for all, and mtb shoes have proper tread on the sole.
Currently on Shimano MC5 - which have the Boa closures. Shoes are ace - not too bulky, stiff enough for the job (oo-err!) reasonably light, and easy to walk in without looking like I've crapped myself. Except for the Boa closures - these keep loosening. I'd go for something with velcro next time, like the Specialized MTB Comp I had before. Again, good fit, long lasting, not too bulky/heavy.

I use Shimano RX8s for road, gravel and light XC use and find them to be largely perfect.
They’re probably not as aero as a proper road shoe with road pedals but the difference is irrelevant for me as I’m not in the business of marginal gains.
ETA: So I’m as PomB recommends too i.e. I use only SPD shoes.

Thank you for the replies.
Yeah that was my thinking using SPD on both bikes. Just that I wanted a shoe that was slightly less MTB/bulky. Plus I have kipper/wide feet.
I have a bontrager pair at the moment but want a new pair.
Off for a fit up T.Sturdy when home so really looking forward to getting back into cycling now the running days are coming to an end. Need to save/look after the knees. Still want to ski and do daft things I did at 20 LOL.
On the bike I'm buying wanted 2 sets of wheels for road and gravel so an easy change out.

i’d have a good look at Lake cycling shoes, extremely comfortable and designed to fit normal shaped feet rather than narrow and long style favoured by a lot of the Italian shoe makers. I’ve used their road shoes for over 12 years now and wouldn’t consider looking at another brand.

Cheers Gents for the replies.
Had a look at the Lake MX238's and they look smart and not too bulky underneath. And as OB pointed out they do a wide fit.
Sigma Sports have them in has anyone ordered from these before as I'm after a few bits from there site.
Bought my last pair from them a couple of months ago, I only live 5 miles from the Oakham store so a bit of no brainer. Picked them up and tried them on in the store just to check the fit hadn’t changed since my last pair. Had a look at the Lake MX238's and they look smart and not too bulky underneath. Try on a few different shoes in your LBS (or order online and return those not suitable). Shoes - at least good fitting ones - come in all shapes and they won’t necessarily suit your foot shape.
Specialised at too narrow for my feet and Fizik don’t have enough volume in the upper section, but Shimano RC7 fit me very well. My point is everyone is different and recommendations and pointless unless we know you have the same shape feet.

Sigma look a decent online store in which I wouldn't know when to stop the buying.
Defo on the trial and error with shoe fitments. Not sure how most get into some as you need a foot like a canoe long and thin. But the lake do have a wide fitment in most of there shoes.
What about pedals then for my Gravel/Roadie? Spd is an Spd or not??

SPD is SPD, pretty much. The £30-ish Shimanos are very popular; I went for Look's equivalent as they are supposed to have a bit more float (especially if you use their own cleats). The only other real choice is if you'd like hybrid pedals where one side is flat for normal shoes; I've got those on my old bike but as i don't run into town shopping on my bike any more, I went with double-sided SPDs for the new one.
There are a few variations on the two bolt spd type pedal/cleat.
As mentioned, Look offer more float I believe - I also understand they're compatible with shimano cleats too.
Hope have just released a series of pedals, that look spd but aren't compatible.
Can't offer much in terms of recommendation - especially as I have quite narrow feet.
Out of interest, what bike you getting?

It's a pre milestone b'day present to myself so going down the Tom Sturdy route.
Something that I can have two sets of wheels and ride either gravel or on the road.
They look timeless so will see me out.
Beautiful. I went for a stock Enigma last year and adore it. Another couple of years, and I'll get a bespoke one from them. As you say - timeless. Something that I can have two sets of wheels and ride either gravel or on the road.

I went a little more 'audax' than true gravel, and have found 35c tyres cover pretty much everything I would do on the bike. If I were more into 'proper' gravel, I'd definitely have a pair of 650b plus higher volume tyres.
Yeah excited, Did contact Reilly but didn't get much response then came across TS and thought B.......x to it you only live once. Could get a motorbike for the cost but not allowed one of those.
Saying that I won't be buying another bike ))) The build will be a while but I'm not in any rush just a nice new bike for summer 22 will be great.
Used to cycle decades ago or what feels like decades ago, time to hang the trainers up a bit and look after the knees for skiing if we ever get chance with this strange life we have ongoing.
So yes Sway a timeless piece that will look the dog's in decades to come

My "experiences" with Reilly were pretty poor (documented on my thread last year on here).
So, I made use of the fact that the dudes at Enigma were really rather irritated at how Mark Reilly treated them - and they were more than happy to not only be night and day in terms of service, but also utterly smashed Reilly on spec for essentially the same price. Under C2W too, and when they could sell everything they could produce at full price...
Cannot wait to see yours!

I really haven't got clue what I'm doing but usually hit anything feet first. I'm sure TS will sort me/set me on the right path.
Re Spec same again not much of an idea but it's not my worry. Two sets of wheels so I can swap when ones got a puncture ;0)
Just need a pair of comfy shoes that don't feel like I'm wearing Stiletto's again )))))))))
I may post the bike on the Topic re New Bikes. But that's a long way away.
Mate has an enigma and he loves it. Just wanted to trump him
