I need a new lock, doesn't need to secure the bike overnight - just to stop opportunist thieves while it's at the pub/shop/cafe etc. Any suggestions?

I don't generally leave my bike out of my sight, but for just popping into a cafe to order to grab something from a shop I have a Hip Z Lock, fits in my pocket it's kind of a heavy duty zip tie. It will stop someone from walking off with your bike but that's about it.

I've got one of these:

http://www.onguardlock.com/store/terrier-8062

Seems like the best made of the very light locks, allows me to tie it down to something... at the same time, I'm aware that it can be cut in a second with the right tool.

There are several lightweight/carryable/wearable locks around... but there are articles showing how they can all be overcome in seconds, so you've got to balance safety against cost, and importantly, against the hassle of carrying/using the lock - if you leave it at home because it's too heavy/awkward, or don't bother putting it on because it's too fiddly, or in my case don't want to have to remember an extra key each time... then you've wasted your money.

The lock I linked to fits in a jersey pocket without really noticing it, is long enough to get around something sensible without a fight, and is complete in itself without needing keys etc to unlock it. I am completely aware it will only stop a random passer-by walking off with my bike, anyone with tools and it's gone.

Hiplok POP Cable Bike Lock

This is the next one up in the range from the one Jay suggests. In reality, I suspect neither is secure, but it does have an individual key … but is lots heavier.

I wear this around my waist and join my and kids’ bikes together. It’s good quality and comes with three keys.

I’d say it would be fine for pootling about, but if seriously cycling the lighter one would be better.
