They're a bit st aren't they?

Bought a second hand bike as a replacement for my knackered commuter, and it's my first experience of roller brakes, Shimano Nexus C3010 I think. I like the idea of the lack of maintenance requirement, but they don't have a lot of stopping power. The back is way worse than the front, so presumably in need of some TLC, cable tension's ok so I'll try getting some grease for it. Anyone got much experience with roller brakes?

I remember my son having an old bike with one & he didn't get on with it - here's a link to some hopefully helpful tips: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/rollerbrakes.html Good luck & keep off the 1 in 4 descents!

Biggest hill within miles of here is 27 meters above sea level so I don't think that's a problem biggrin I've ordered a tube of grease, but annoyingly it looks like I need to drop the wheel out to get at the greasing point.

It's probably not logical but `greasing your brakes` doesn't appeal to me!

When these came out the alternative was calipers or the old tandem cantilevers. Brakes have improved immensely since. The worst thing about rollercams was their weight.

They seem to be pretty common here, presumably due them being about as close to maintenance free as you can get. Previous bike had V brakes which were way more effective. The forks on this one do have the mounting lugs for callipers so replacing them is an option, but the front isn't too bad now I've got used to pulling it bit harder than on my old bike, it's the rear that's useless, so presumably should be able to make work at least as well as the front.

It's also my first experience of hub gears, the 7 Speed Nexus hub works well, I just need to sort the brakes and I should have a few years of near maintenance free commuting.

Greased the brakes at the weekend and it's made a hell of a difference, the back brake is now actually capable of stopping the bike!

Annoyingly though t looks like a previous owner has broken a bit of plastic on the chain guard where it screws on to the mount, so have glued it together instead. If I can't get the chain guard off I can't get the chain on and off the rear sprocket (hub gears rather than derailleur) so I can't get the wheel off. Which means as soon as I need a new inner tube it's going to have to go in to the local bike shop!
