I know I know... very basic question.. but to maintain & extend the life of components what should I be doing on a regular basis & post ride?

Also can you reccomend any products to cover off the maintenance?

I'm assuming, some oiling / greasin off chain / mech / gear set etc?

General wash off of dirt & grime?

I'm a fair weather rider on a gravel bike. Mainly old railway tracks, canal sides & general road riding - not very often i'm out in the wet & muddy so mostly dust & general grime

Thanks

What sort of lube is on the chain now?

A cleaner bikes components will last longer, but how clean and how much longer seems to cause many heated debates.

I've given up with dry chain lubes for now as even in this dry spell I ride through enough mud and puddles a wet lube is better.

Depending on the conditions I'll either clean the bike/drive train after every ride if its heavily raining and all off road on the mtb. Or if it's mostly dry and the road bike, probably once every ten rides.

I've got some engine degreaser and nail brushes to clean the chain. Then a hose down and that's about it for me.

Usually my bike gets thrown back in the garage and the only maint i do is to turn off the lights. However it's an old Boardman and i am reluctant to spend more time on something that is being replaced by a new Ribble 872 soon (delayed another month frown ). One would suspect my new bike will get special treatment for at least a year until after JOGLE then revert to type.

On the lube sub-topic I've started using muck-off dry lube and find it only lasts 2 rides (roughly 100 miles) before i can hear the chain and it needs more.

I could, perhaps, clean the whole bike free of grime then try again but.....

Mine an old Voodoo Limba - pre halfords days, pretty decent spec, scandium frame etc.

Current Lube - no idea to be honest - i took it in for a free gment service before summer & the tidied it up & did some bits & bobs but not sure what products they used. Nor if any will still be on there: )
